Ballard buttplates

Always wondered why Cody Ballards never looked quite right. That is like an original Ballard.  Now I know, or does someone make a full sized buttplate for a late #6 stock?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I think that's a 2nd generation #6 buttplate Joe? The first was a heavier German with the top prong removable, as it was a screw that looked like the old percussion picks, and held the plate on.
Then this style you have. Both had the flat bottom buttstocks.
The 3rd and final version was a lighter buttplate and stock that had a rounded bottom to both stock and buttplate.

The other German style:

The final style:

I've found the Cody actions and parts are very close to originals, but most other parts like stocks and buttplates are not that close.

In my picture to the left is an originall #6 buttplate. The new plate that is cut in half is what CPA and others sell as a #6 plate.  The reproduction is much smaller. I think it's the same plate Cody Ballard #6s have.

If you have a Cody Ballard #6 will you measure it from top to bottom?

I don't think there were two sizes of this particular plate.  Yes I'm aware of the other plates but only wondering about this style.

Cody was pretty loose with the model designations, so their #6 wasn't always even close to Marlin's #6. I did indeed have a "Cody Ballard #6" and it was pistol grip, and had the ball & spur lever. But it was a Marlin style crescent buttplate, not even a schuetzen buttplate.

Thought you had a #6. Brad has two, I'll pester him.

Cody Ballard offered correct models as I remember but the stocks never looked quite like originals.   The #6s anyway.

No I have a Schoyen model that uses the #6 ball and spur lever, but a Schoyen style buttplate.

Looking good, Joe. Nice welding, what technique did you use?

Thanks, Chuck. 6011 stick rod.

Got the lower prong bent down to match the angle of the original plate. Close enough for this cowboy.  I was talking with Dave Casey today and he told me he made the mold for these repro plates and that the plate he copied came from an original #6. Think he said it belonged to Skip Epp?

So there must be different size plates on the same design. I like the larger plate when I hold it offhand.

Yes Jack, JG Weld for sure!  Grin  Didnt want to swoop the stock up to fit the smaller plate. Just wouldn't look right.

This is a Ballard with a Winchester Helm like stock, and an aluminum Helm buttplate. Aluminum is light, easy to work with and polishes well. Does anyone out there make aluminum buttplate castings?  Huh

Not that I'm aware of, Bob.

Guess I should have said submerged arc? Sounds more technical.  Grin

Had to stretch the plate 3/8 inch to make it match what I assume is a late high comb #6 stock.

Ballards are mysterious.

ssdave   Thanks for the insight and clarification. Usually pretty good at putting two and two together, but not this time.

Also just came to mind, that anyone doing buttplate castings could pour aluminum, would is another question. You might check with CPA to see if their supplier is still making them, and point you in their direction.
