A lot of us get too wrapped up in making rifles beautiful.  I shoot rifles that have bondo, duct tape, athletic tape, chunks of foam, glued on wood pieces, etc.  Some of them have rusty, unblued barrels, or rusty unfinished receivers.  Front sight held with rubber bands.

Not because I can't do a decent stock and finish work, but because there's better ways to occupy what little spare time I have, and I'd like to be shooting when I can.

About the only thing I cringe at is welding scope mounts and sight bases onto the receiver or barrel with a flux core mig.  A guy ought to at least use a TIG, and make a neat weld, if he doesn't have the time to do a proper fit, drill and tap!

Whelen once said "only accurate rifles are interesting". I like mine to look good too.
I understand a project in the works and even used to have a couple of bolt action rifle stocks with cut-off forends that I used for testing before I bothered with fitting the action/barrel into the final stock. Looked ugly as hell but I didn't become known for my ugly guns Wink

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Ugly is only seen as coming from someone else. Chuck on the other hand saw the Beauty in his offhand scores and not a damn thing wrong with that. Might not have been real attractive to others but few could shoot better offhand scores than Chuck himself.

Although an ugly rifle can give a lot of pleasure if it's very accurate, I've rarely found an ugly rifle I discovered was really accurate.
On the other hand I've owned (and still own) some beautiful rifles that are not target quality accuracy, but I still am very happy with them. Can't hand an ugly gun to a buddy and tell them, "But it really shoots great" and have them appreciate it. But hand them a beautiful rifle, and after they're done admiring it, you can say it shoots just OK, and they still admire it.
I personally prefer nice guns. Not minty guns, but just well cared for guns, with pleasant color case, nice rust bluing, and great wood. They make me smile just holding them; and if they happen to shoot really well that's even better.

If you dont have or cant find shim stock that is the correct thickness, slide the "rail" (the side of the base which is too high) on some fine wet or dry until you get it where you want it. Using a file is OK too but you  might take too much off which means working the other side down. Most hardware stores have a variety of shim stock, you should be able to get what you need.  cut a piece a little longer than the sight base. Slide a piece under the side that needs to be lifted  and butt it up against the mounting screws, and if you want, trim the part that sticks out with a scissors.
I hope this helps!

Well hot damn, this gives me a whole new perspective! Why paint a car or a house, why mow a lawn, why wash clothes? I've been wasting all kinds of time my entire life!

Its a competitive rifle still in the works not a house a car or a lawn. Not unusual to get everything fitting just right and then to have it duplicated out of a nice piece of wood. Was that not mentioned at gunsmithing school.

I'm going to stop mowing the yard too, and tell the neighbors it's a trial to see how well the grass grows before I mow it!! Ha!
I like this idea a lot!

A friend of mine insisted there is no point in mowing the lawn, it is self limited and won't grow beyond a certain point.

Yeah, but at what point is it OK? We had a couple girls who lived next door for a long time, and every 5-6 years they'd hire a landscaper to come and cut it all down, and then completely landscape it. By the time they did an overhaul their grass was 3 ft. tall!
I was glad we had a solid fence between houses, but people still walked by and asked us how we could stand having it next door like that?
We got new neighbors last fall, and are tickled to see them keeping things nice again!
