As expected, the sight still leans left when I reversed the base.

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Take it to a gunsmith. He will shim it for you.

Level the action in a padded vise and then just shim the sight to also be level. Its really not rocket science or as hard as you might think out to be. You could also use a square with action being level and use the square to align the sight. Several ways to skin that same cat just pick one and go for it.

Since it's the gun, I'd shim the sight instead of filing it. But I'd put a dab of glue on the shim once you know it's true. That way it will stay on the base if you remove the sight for any reason. Then a little heat will release it if need be.

In 1978 completed the 2-yr resident gunsmithing program at Trade-Tech in Provo, Utah. Quite capable of doing it myself. But I won't shim it, I will reprofile the base.

I hate shims!!!!

There you go and now use your gunsmithing knowledge to take care of it and to do it the way that you feel is right. Wish you would have brought that up sooner instead of asking how to do something you had already knew how to do yourself.

I knew how to do, wanted to know if you guys take the time to fix it or just band-aid the issue. If shims work for you, and obviously they do for the many high scores that are shot then I can't argue that. I just hate adding another point of failure in an assembly.

I guess a really good fix would be to set the receiver in a vise on the mill and cut a flat on the tang exactly the size of the footprint of the base and then make the bottom of the base flat. Wink

Me personally I would not mill a flat on the action but file the base to fit. You actually scared the Hell out of me when you mentioned milling a flat. If you had done such a thing to my own I would have been extremely pissed off it would have decreased the resale value of the rifle at least 50% or possibly even more. Did you take an online gunsmithing course or did you actually attended one and for how long. If your instructor had actually taught you to do such a thing he should have been fired and someone qualified should be teaching him.

Notice the winky eye John? I'm pretty sure he was joking.
But a few quick swipes with a file and a test fit, and you'll have the staff upright in maybe 5-10 minutes work.

Yes a joke. I would modify the base. But to answer your question, yes a two-year resident program with the first year being almost completely machine shop.

One of the instructors (Machine Shop) used to grumble about us gunsmithing students, all two of us. He would say "Damn gun cranks, mark everything with chalk and cut it with an ax".

Wow you scared the crap out of me and probably everyone else who works on their own stuff and have never taken a gunsmithing course. But also know better than to do the wrong thing to any type of firearm especially a single shot falling block rifle and what this site is dedicated too.

Where's Chuck Blender when you need him?  He could give some good aesthetic advice on how to fix a crooked sight.

I've got an OT bolt action Stevens .22RF rifle I built up a "target" style stock using wood and bondo about 55 years ago when I was a young man in high school.
I wanted a target .22 rifle, but my part time job at $1.40 hr. didn't allow such a grand purchase. So I traded a tune up, and some repairs on a friend's car for the Stevens .22 rifle. I saw a story in Guns and Ammo about reworking a factory stock to target style by cutting and adding wood with dowels, and filler. So went to work cutting and adding a high comb, cheekpiece, wide flat forearm, and an exaggerated pistol grip. All done with wood, and some Bondo filler where needed. The grip was my finishing touch where I got the general shape in wood, then put a latex glove on, and after coating the grip with Bondo I shouldered the stock and grasped the pistol grip to make it fit exactly to my hand. Painted it all sating black after some sanding to smooth it out.
The barrel was pencil contour, so I got a piece of 3/4" black pipe and opened up the breech end until is slid over the barrel and butted to the receiver. Then put small spacers between barrel and sleeve at the crown, and used Acraglass poured in between the two until it was almost full. After setting up I removed the spacers and topped it off. Blued the outside, and mounted a 3x9 scope on the action.
It's a pretty accurate rifle, and more so than before adding the changes to stock and barrel. Still have it after all those years, but haven't fired it in decades. Poor gun got put in the back of the safe when real .22 target rifles took it's place. Was going to give it to one of my grandkids, but they deserve better guns!

Nice story Vall I started playing gunsmith around the 6th grade and probably ruined more than I fixed.
Chuck Blender is one of the top Schuetzen Offhand competitors in the country. He also probably has the ugliest rifle to shoot. But it also fits him to a tee and it has been said he would still add a little here, add a little there and its still a work in progress. I believe he has since moved onto Lever Rifle silhouette competition and I have heard Luke and Ferren have also done the same.
