Shiloh / MVA

I just received a rear sight from MVA that has a decided lean to the left. Is this a condition of Shiloh or MVA not maintaining a QC process?

I never had to fit a base to a C. Sharps rifle using later purchased C. Sharps sights. Is this a regular problem with Shiloh and MVA combinations?

Should I shim this or file for a fit?

Have you set the MVA sight on a flat surface to check it for true straight vertical? I'd do that before pointing the finger at MVA or Shiloh.
I don't own a Shiloh, but have MVA sights, and never had a problem with any. Nor has anyone I know had a problem with MVA.
You're calling it both a Shiloh and a C Sharps. Which is it?
You're having a string of bad luck lately.

Good suggestion - Looks like it tips to the left

MVA's Rough n Ready sight is/was a problem in combination with their Beech Front. I could not make the front blade work with the rear, they made the rear too short. Lots of correspondence with MVA never got it fixed.

I said I am having trouble with the Shiloh and I said I never had trouble with a C. Sharps.

Yup, sometimes problems come in groups. Wink

I'd call Cheryl at MVA and tell her about the base issue. They'll likely pay to return it and send you another good base. They've always been very good at customer service.

Not unusual to have a tang sight staff lean.  I doubt your MVA sight is not square. More likely your rifles tang is out of whack or the screw holes are off center.  I'd shim it.

Totall agree and very common at times for one to have to do. Or to remove some metal off the base to accomplish the same. But now its lost its value and it probably won't work on another rifle so just shim it and be happy and go out and shoot the rifle.

I've never had any trouble with mine, however, most of my Shiloh's have MVA sight bases installed at the factory.  They individually fit them to the rifle's tang.

I recently fitted the MVA tang sight to my 40-65 and mine also has a lean to the left, my question is, how do I shim it ?.

If you don't have a variety of shim stock sizes just cut one out of a cheap feeler guage set and keep the rest of them for the same type of use. Just cut enough off the one that you need and you can probably get a couple of more off of that same size for any future use and needs or continue to use it as it was originally designed to be used.

Haven't had time to really look this over but I believe the base does not sit flat on the tang, the base is arched on the bottom and basically rests on "two rails". That means fitting is not all that tough with a good mill file. I just expected the tolerances at both companies to preclude these issues. Wishful thinking.....

Yessir that's how my feeler gages get used up! Makes for cheap shim stock.

Did you flip the sight around backwards and see if it leaned tp the right?

Considering that the sight base is machine cut, and the tang is hand finished, I might lean more towards an issue there.

It seems like I have to shim just about all my tang sights, be tjhey on an original Sharps or Remington, a Shiloh Sharps, or a Winchester lever gun.   I finally concluded it must be my crooked neck or something.   Anyway - - - why hack up a feeler gauge, even an el-cleapo one?   Just cut a piece off a beer can.  Fold double if one layer isn't thick enough.   Oh, be sure and empty drink the can empty first!

I do the same as George. I use aluminum pop cans to shim, and if they're too thick, I even polish a piece down on emery paper before cutting a strip off.
But once I figure out what it needs to correct the staff, I take metal off the opposite side and reinstall the base without a shim. I don't move sights around, and have separate sights for each gun. So don't care if it fits other guns or not. As long as it fits that gun, I'm happy. I just prefer to not have a shim under it once I'm done figuring how to make it vertical.
