Early Stevens 44 color case hardening
Jan 20th, 2021 at 4:27pm
Print Post
Hello,
Does any one of you know of the detailed technique used by Stevens to create the "waves" of color case hardening on their receivers?

I thought I had read an explanation somewhere, can't find it, and figured this board would be the best knowledge pool to fish in.  Smiley

Many thhanks in advance

The Stevens chain drive story I remember claimed the parts were also hung at an angle, making the final ripple pattern even more distinctive.

Gail at CPA has described in brief what their contractor does to produce it on their 44-1/2 actions. The info would be easy to get through CPA.

I would not want to try to remember and repeat what I think she told me. I am certain to get it wrong.

I always wondered how you Gun Smiths handled Cyanide? I am old and decrepit and would not want to put myself in a position to get involved with that stuff. Is there all types of procedures for handling and does it require some type of permit?

I suspect  that without it good color case hardening is not in the cards. Years ago I got a product called Kasenit but I think it just was for surface hardening although somebody did say it contained Cyanide and to be careful. Never got a chance to use it and it may still be in storage some place.

Just send what you need to be re-cased in the original Stevens style to Gail at CPA and you can't go wrong.

I and many other photographers use Potassium Cyanide for fixer.  It's not that dangerous if you don't drink it.  You can get drops on your fingers, which is common, and can use it for years.  Again....just don't ingest it.

I asked her about the cost.  Best I recall it was $275.  I'd consider it cheap if it looks good.

280 was the quote I got from CPA.  A buddy had a high wall color case hardened by CPA recently and had no complaints.  CPA seems to be a bit of a bargain to me.

Gail and CPA have been indispensable in helping me with info and parts to get my old model 44 atleast functioning.  When the time comes I will be sending the receiver to them for coloring.
