mold difficult to open "sticky"
May 16th, 2020 at 1:33pm
Print Post
I have recently had the problem of the mold being difficult to open. The bullets drop out easy enough but  the resistance to opening leaves scars along the mold separation line when the bullet does drop out. I have no idea what causes this and how to fix it, can someone please help me out?
Thanks!

How do you unstick it when it sticks?

Does it stick when empty?

Depending on the mold, sounds like alignment pins are sticking in the apposing block.  See rub marks?  Coat the pins with a magic marker then open and close the mold till you can see where something is rubbing. If you have a pin block drive the pesky pin back a little.

Mess with it.

Thanks Westerner!
It does not stick when empty, will check the alignment pins and see what that reveals.

How about the joint of the mold handles. . Maybe try a different set of handles. Maybe lube the joint with wax.

Maybe you are using the wrong handles for that mold.

Tap the hinge pin with  a mallet or hardwood stick.  It will probably solve your stickiness.

Heat the mold and lube all the pins with paraffin wax which does not crude up.  And the cavity pins have to be lubed every use of the mold

Thanks for your advice everyone, if it ever quits raining here I will try the techniques that you recommend. However, I am quite sure the problem is NOT with the handles, and probably with the alignment pins. Will keep an eye on them and apply lube if need be.
Thanks!
