Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Yes I built the Hawken(and a Dimick) last year. Made the  lock, triggers, forged guard and 2 pc. forged/brazed buttplate, a early style feature. Its as accurate as I could make could make using my ref. material and looking at the originals in Cody/Helena. I did not make the breech snail, as I probably should have, its the typical late style.

Wow! Impressive, sir! You don't meet many who have made their own triggers, let alone the lock. I raise my cup o' coffee to you!

And I love the story of the Ballard and it's careful preservation. Hard to imagine anyone doing so today.

This was my Pacific when I first purchased it, and used acetone to remove the varnish covering the caliber. Never knew the caliber until it was revealed under the ugly brown varnish.

Beautiful bull! I chased Roosevelts Elk one fall in western Washington with my Hawken. In a spike/fork only area all I saw was nice bulls. I can still smell that Olympic Mtn. air. It was like taking power hits of pure oxygen. I did take a nice 4x4 blacktail out there with the Hawken.

Kristen shot this antelope in the open fields with a muzzleloader when she was nine months pregnant with twins.
I still wonder how she got close enough to shoot it with a muzzleloader without trees or hills to hide behind.

The terrain looks like she would have to be using the curve of the earth for cover. LoL  Amazing young lady! Our daughter-in-law shot her first whitetail deer years ago, but she was only pregnant with a single baby.

I know a pair of then-young ladies that went out together and shot a mountain lion while both were pregnant. Today their offspring are engaged to be married. I have a picture of 'em around here somewhere I'll try to find.
