	Was fortunate enough to take this antelope near Ft Laramie Wyoming. Shooting my trapdoor sporting rifle in 45-70. Lymans 457125 government bullet with 62.5gr swiss 1.5fg. 142 yards. Was hunting on a friends ranch with my father and had a great time all around. I generally take a lot of time to position the animal away from blood, close the mouth etc etc but I was soaked and freezing so forgive the pic for not being as “clean” as I wish it was.

	Nice!!! And a fine rifle too. Here in Montana where I live, one day the antelope are in the woods wandering around and the next you can't get closer that 400 yds on the prairie! kw

	Thanks all. Im an Arizona desert rat so anything below 60deg is cold for me ! I used the barrel sights. Sighted to hit 8” high at 100yds for a bottom of the chest hold and a dead on 150yd hold. Shot for the root of the neck and broke the neck at the shoulder took out both carotids. Antelope went nowhere. Muzzle is taped to keep the rain and mud out when crawling

	Love the picture, the rifle, the country and the Antelope you shot. A good friend of mine just recently made a single set trigger for his Trapdoor. He copied it from an original by chance does your rifle also have a single set.

	marinade in Italian dressing and lightly grill a chop or three. make jerky if you like, it is good.

	Nice speed-goat, Tried & true recipe in a cast iron frying pan cook a large onion sliced up in butter, slice the loin or tenderloin 3/8" thick accross the grain bread with flour and a little salt and pepper, when onion is cooked remove from pan leave the oil in, place breaded meat into pan, no cover cook untill blood comes up through breading, flip over cook till a little blood shows on top, its done, make milk gravy out of everything left in the pan. 	Im a newbie to eating antelope but the friend we were hunting with is a Wyoming rancher who makes some fine antelope jerky and cooks up some outstanding tenderloin too ! Been enjoying eating this one. Kids and wife all like eating game meat so nothing doesnt get et.

	They do say if you get one that's not been up putzing around doing the antelope thing on a cold day, and you really want to make a deep slash into the winter jerky supply.... Take a backstrap, and tenderloin, rinse it off good, soak it in salt water over night in the ice box, next morning rinse them good and put back in the fridge, along about supper time take the meat and slice it thin, little bit of Lowrey's on the meat, couple drops of Worscheshire, dredge in flour and fry in hot grease. Sear one side good, let the moisture rise to the top, flip em and let that side sear a couple of minutes.

	Congrats on the hunting success and great picture. If it can work out, Pronghorn that hasn't been run and can be cooled off relatively quickly is good eating.

	Nice rifle Zack. Is it an original or a rebuild-copy/restoration. If original, any history to the rifle? What type front sight and why the rib underneath? Like the heavy schnabel forend. Which ever it is, it is a very nice rifle. I like Trapdoor sporting rifles and you don’t see to many. John

	Reminds me of my one and only antelope hunt in the fall of 84. Drove all night to meet my hunting partners. This was a last minute thing as tags were available in Wyoming to anyone. I found out my hunting buddies wanted to drink most of the night and start hunting about noon. But I got lucky and filled my tag, 14 inches around the curve. He just stood and looked at me at 100 yards. One shot with my Ruger number 1 25-06 and the hunt was over. It was a disappointment, hope your hunt was more satisfying. Mike

	wow nice goat and beautiful rifle!!!! did you build your rifle or buy it that way ???? i have one too found it talking to a friend out west. he knew i was looking for one a shooter not necessary to be a collector, and so i bought it from his friend and once i got it home started to checking its serial number. made in 1886 as a m-1884 rifle. when it became a sporting rifle is the big question ? in talking with the guy i bought it from he gave me the number to the old man he bought it from. he was a friend of his dad and grandfather and in speaking to him he said he had had the rifle for more than 70 years, he got it from his grand father who got it from hid great grandfather whew!! so the real heart breaker - he said he use to have some papers from the u.s. army about the rifle. he said he was sure that his nephew used them one year to start a fire at there hunting cabin!! even bigger heart break !!!!! he felt it would sell faster and for more money if he had it re-blued and the stock refinished !!! DEESH !!! so i had a guy here in Ohio and another one out west look it over. they both said that its possible it could be and original sporting rifle. the old guy said it had been hunted with many times all thru its history with him. thats enough for me to make it extra special to shoot and hunt with. bore is perfect SB (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links) (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links)

	Thanks everyone for the comments. The rifle does have a SST which is neat but I dont use hunting. Its an original infantry rifle that has been cut down and rebarreled with a barrel off a sharps Borchardt. Real shooter too. I have linited experience hunting with black powder cartridge single shots but for hunting the way I usually do (on the ground spot and stalk) its pretty hard to beat a trapdoor infantry rifle- relatively light, plenty accurate, very reliable, sling swivels and the 1873 rear sight works very well.

	hey zack, thought the barrel contour was different than mine. its a beautiful rifle though. thought about putting one of those cast iron pistol grips but i have gotten so use to it the way it is dont think i will just leave it the way it is. oh i found a guy on gunbroker that made the scope base that goes on to the original buffington rear sight screws. so i can put the rear sight back on which i can shoot targets still pretty good but i cant hunt with them. my 61 year old eyes just cant see them deer well enough any more without a scope. this 2X7 LER scope does the trick nicely. SB

	Yeah Ive liked those scope mounts. The trapdoor lacks the sex appeal of some single shots but its pretty hard to beat as a workhorse

	I have a beautiful trap door that was apparently never issued. It is stamped 1873 but I have been told it is actually an 1884 mode serial #3188641l. Unfortunately Bubba's grandpa just had to spoterize it. I love to shoot the rifle but the trigger pull must be twenty pounds. I didn't know they made set triggers for the trapdoor.

	It's a straight 1873 marked action with an 1884 Buffington sight. What is the serial number and that will give us the date?

	Long Range, there are too many numbers in that serial. If it is 318641, then it was made in in the 2nd quarter of 1886. 4,916 rifles were made in that quarter and 1,000 rare 24 inch barrelled carbines and 5,000 regular 22 inch carbines. Recheck that serial and measure the barrel length. Is the Buffington marked with an R or a C on the upper right side of the leaf? Does the buttplate have a sliding compartment cover? Does the end of the forearm have a hole or plugged hole where the ramrod would have been?

	Check your serial number again, looks like it has one to many digits (possibly one to many 8s). If your serial number is 318642 then it was manufactured in 1886.

	The joy of eating antelope depends upon what it has been eating! Sagebrush tastes like sagebrush! However, if you can find one that eats from a grain field there is no finer meat.
