I just completed a project for a client that has a different twist. He was supposed to inherit a rifle from a family member. Upon arriving at the home all the rifles had disappeared and all that he could locate was a heavy round Hepburn barrel in 30-40 Krag. Deciding that was better than nothing as reminder of the passed family member he carried it home. Some time later at a gun show he came across a "Varmintized" hepburn with a extremely light and short 219 DW barrel with no sights or extractor. He picked it up intending to have the 30-40 barrel insalled on the action. The original conversion was tastefully done with the tangs shortened and a thru bolt installed. A custom butt stock was made and the tiny barrel installed. After sending it to me we discussed his desires for the project. Not being a hand loader he was concerned about the availability of 30-40 ammo. It was decided to recountour the barrel to a more sporting profile and set it back to enable it to be chambered in 30-30. A receiver sight was fitted along with a new forearm. The stocks were refinished and checkered. The metal was polished and color cased and blued. I like the way it turned out, it will be used for deer hunting and plinking. It was a pleasure to put this project together for the client, I am sure it will see many years of use in it's current configuration.

Interesting timing. I had no idea that the Remington Hepburns got used for varmint rifles but I found one for sale just a couple of days ago in K-22 Hornet with a Fecker scope.

There are some interesting ones out there. I have one converted to .22LR (with unusual firing pin conversion), upper tang is shortened, butt stock has thru bolt, lower tang has been extended and bent to nearly 90 degrees, speed-locked hammer, and trigger over travel set screw installed.
