I used to use the old #9 for perfume, must spoil over time or the bottle was refilled with another substance.

The original poster was asking for a product to protect wood, case colors and the barrel and I tend to think some of the replies are more geared to just the barrel.

Yes, he did, but he was asking for the near-impossible--like the medicine show products claimed to cure everything from baldness to impotence.

Based on advertised claims, I think Ballistol comes closest to a universal all-in-one product, but "universal" products seldom excel under extreme conditions.  The atmospheric environment itself is extremely important in determining the effectiveness of any product--what may provide perfect protection in the desert might be useless in a rain forest.

The question is, have they ever changed the formula and does that stuff, ever go bad. The Hoppes #9 that I have, has a light kerosene type viscosity, but  smells horrible!!!

Frank

The composition of Hoppes #9 formula(s) have been discussed endlessly on the internet.  Suspect what you have is the original formula, which contains organic chemicals derived from oleic acid, which have some of the properties of animal fats--meaning they can turn rancid like bacon fat.  Maybe that's the source of the bad odor.

To clarify, I was not asking for an all purpose product. An individual product for each part of the gun is OK. I am quite familiar with all of the products and yes WD-40 as an answer is wrong. Ballistol may be OK and I have Ed's red mixes but none with Lanolin. I used to design Auto transmissions for Ford and I worry about adverse effects due to it's PH. Sharps have a light watery blue so the finish is not as robust as others. I am experimenting with 50/50 ATF/Kerosene. Anyway, I appreciate the responses but am looking for something a little more in depth.

THank you,
Charles

Liquids pick up and hold dust and grit, similar to a wet carrier for abrasives in a lapping compound.

I sill think Renaissance is what you are looking for. Good on both wood and metal. The Smithstoinian uses it on metal and wood for long term preservation without altering the material.

Yes, but...doesn't the surface to which it's applied have to be scrupulously de-greased (not just "wiped down") for the wax to adhere properly?

Have found both Break-Free and Remington Gun Oil to work very well for long-term protection on clean metal & wood. I usually wipe down with a silicone impregnated cloth before putting into the safe.

As far as a metal protector is concerned, a 43 hour salt spray test was performed, and EEZOX, CorrosionX, and Break Free, scored best in that order. EEZOX stood out as the best. You can look up
the article on Accurate Shooter website under long term storage.
For as long as I can remember (at least since breakfast) I have used LPS 2 for light storage, and it has never let me down. IT DRIES AND DOES NOT LEAVE A FILM LIKE WD40. It has never harmed a finish in my experience, including all kinds of wood finishes. It also works well as a light lubricant. For ten years I lived less than a block away from the Pacific ocean and never had a rust problem, although I kept constant vigil.

Gee, I thought I was the only living soul using LPS!  Which I've been doing for a good 40 yrs with complete satisfaction!  LPS 3 provides even better protection, but it's much thicker and rather messy.

So, if it doesn't leave a film, what does it leave ?

I  like the old Birchwood Casey Sheath..never tried the newer Barrier oil.  For really long term storage the only thing I trust is RIG.

It leaves a dry film as opposed to WD40's wet sticky film, which tends to trap contaminants, dust etc, which makes an even bigger mess. Starrett and I'm sure others make similar products, I found the LPS product 40 or more years ago, and it  worked so well never felt a need to change, but I'm all ears.  Krag
