What exterior cleaner/protectant?
Apr 1st, 2018 at 7:18pm
Print Post
I am nervous about cleaning and lubing my old Sharps and Ballards. These are 98% guns and I have the minus-Midas touch. So what have people been using for high grade guns that is guaranteed not to harm the finish (Bluing, Wood, and CC).

Thank you,
Charles

Lube Frog is user friendly and offers good protection without harming finish on metal or wood. WD-40 long term corrosion protection is the best for rust protection and is a good lube also.

I love Ballistol, been using it for a good many years on my guns, it’s been said the Germans used it for everything, used it on wounds, for frying eggs, etc.  ledball

Some people bad mouth WD40. Never had any bad experience with it. Been using Renaissance Wax for several years. Not advertised as a cleaner it will remove light rust and dirt. Great protectant. The Smithstoinan uses it. Good on metal and wood. Its been discussed here before. Never heard any bad comments yet. It is not cheap but a little goes a long way.

I don't think even the makers would claim that!  Though better than nothing, it's a POOR long term rust preventative, and equally poor as a lubricant, as it oxidizes over time to a varnish-like consistency. Dozens of products FAR superior!  Good to use on rusty tools prior to scraping or wire brushing, on lug nuts, that kind of thing--I usually carry a can in my truck; but guns--no; unless you're the victim of a flood, and no better product can be found right away. (In addition, the silicone it contains makes re-bluing nearly impossible, if that's ever needed.)

Of course, it has its uses; but long term rust protection isn't one of them. Many experiments in rust-resistance have been carried out by various gun mags over the years, and I've never seen WD-40 recommended for that purpose.

Second the use of Renaissance wax as a protectant, but strongly advise this procedure when using on metal:  heat the metal with a hair dryer, heat gun, or similar until good and warm; apply wax - sparingly; reheat; apply second light coat; buff.

Also, while WD40 is a decent penetrant (though my personal experience shows Kroil to be far better), I agree with Redsetter that it's a mediocre (and messy) protectant.

For over 30 years I've used Old West Snake Oil to wipe down both metal and wood on all my old guns after handling them, and before returning them to the safes. I have also used Minn Wax paste wax as a moisture barrier prior to hunting in inclement weather to prevent moisture spots or damage.
I still use Hoppes #9 for cleaning, but the OWSO as a final wipe down. I keep a terry cloth towel in a ziplock baggie and just add a few drops to the towel prior to wiping down guns. My 16 oz. bottle has lasted those 30 years, and just bought a 2nd bottle before I finally run out.

In tests of corrosion preventatives I remember reading the original formula #9 scored very high, even though it wasn't intended for that specific purpose.

Transmission fluid is another good one. I used it when I was muzzle loading.

Back in the late 80's, I tested a few oils (trans fluid was one) by submerging bare, machined mild steel, under water for up to a week or more. The one oil that never started any rust, was K&N air cleaner oil. I had only tried that, because we had it at work and it was handy.

I would have some concerns using Trans. Fluid  or K&N cleaner on an original wood stock or a modern one for that matter. The original poster was asking for a product to protect wood, case colors and the barrel and I tend to think some of the replies are more geared to just the barrel.

I have a question about Hoppes #9. I have a quart bottle of it, from the 60's, maybe even the 50's. It was given to me by my life long , hunter, step father.

The question is, have they ever changed the formula and does that stuff, ever go bad. The Hoppes #9 that I have, has a light kerosene type viscosity, but  smells horrible!!!
