relining 32 long barrel to 22 long rifle

I have an old stevens favorite that was originally a 32 long caliber I would like to reline to 22 long rifle, I am wondering about the existing barrel inside diameter it appears to be just a few thousandths undersize for the liner except for the chamber area which is oversize of the liner, any suggestions on how to deal with this oversize area. thanks Jay

Jay,
I've done a couple of these-  I started with a 7/16" drill ground a couple of steps,  one is a short length existing chamber size another length at bore size long enough to reach past the chamber... Having a tool and cutter grinder available makes this easy.  Not sure what tooling you have?  A lathe? tool post grinder? more? I happen to have a few scrapped 6.5 barrels around so that became my material for another sleeve.  The chamber end was drilled about 3-1/2" deep and I made the sleeve fit this fairly close, metal to metal  maybe a .0005" loose.   For this short section I did use tin and solder it in.  Following this I set the barrel up and drilled it like any other liner job.  I've used both Accraglass and Locktite install the liners and don't really have a preference.
The 32 long groove diameter is right at the liner size, add some rust and corrosion and it's oversize.  I finished drilling one once and didn't like what I saw, I etched the bore with a little muratic acid then rinsed it real well and let it dry.  I then scrubbed with some contraband, (trichl. 1,1,1) and proceeded.  May be a little excessive precaution but the rifle has probably had 20K rounds through it and there's no signs of giving up ground.

Just buy a TJ's liner. He offers them in various outside diameters and I know he has one that is 1/2" OD that will be plenty large and save doing two liners to get there.

Forget the TJ liner and boring the barrel out to 1/2". The Brownell/Redman liner is top quality for 1/3 the price and Greg's installation advise is right on.

Both suggestions are valid. I've done them both ways. You can sleeve the chamber area first then drill out for a 5/16" liner. Not all 32 caliber barrels will clean up for the liner. The rimfire barrels generally will unless deeply pitted. TJ's makes 22 liners in 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2" diameters. If drilling it is a challenge you can send it to Bobby Hoyt and he will drill it for about $50. I've had him do several for me and then I install the liner and finish them up. I've only got a 5/16" diameter drill and this option lets me do more liners.

Yes, the 3/8" OD TJ's liner will be large enough to clean up the .32 bore.

Jay, would you want to consider this instead putting in a liner...

TJ's larger ones are an option and his liners are exceptional, I have used several with great success.  My issue with going to a larger liner throughout is the amount of material removed from the entire barrel - if you go with a 3/8 or 1/2 od.
The method I described is considerably more work but it leaves more material in the original.  The Favorite's I've done recently, one octagon and one half and half  -had muzzle diameters of .550 and .650 respectively, makes a thin tube to work with.

Look on GunBroker for 32RF adapters that are made from drawn brass instead of bar stock and at half the price.

Going with a 22 reline is a lot less hassle in the long run though.

thanks for all the advice, the inside of the barrel does show rifling but does not look real shiny I doubt it would be a good shooter with 32 ammo, I have completely replaced the barrel on another favorite that I have and that was fairly straightforward but this old 32 barrel is in real nice shape on the outside so a reline is my  plan moving forward, thanks again for all the info and advice Jay

I did a 32 to 22 for myself a while back. The bore was very close so I ran a 5/16" drill ( no pilot ) bit through it an the liner went in just fine. I soldered a sleeve on the end of the liner and turn it to fit the chamber. A little Loctite and it was in to stay.  This was done on a Frank Wesson with a 30" barrel and hand ejector. I like the liners from T.J.'s and have used them for almost 20 years.

For me too!  Especially after he told me, when I expressed disappointment over the accuracy, that I'd probably have to fire 1000 rounds or more before its full accuracy was achieved.  On a .22RF?  Installed by him?

This was 25 yrs ago, so maybe he's improved, but it's not a thing I'd be eager to do again.
