Upgrading a Favorite

I'm putting this here in Gunsmithing because this guy did the engraving himself.  I like his approach - didn't put fancy new wood on it, didn't reblue the barrel, finished the receiver French Gray, etc.  This is what I feel a restoration should be.

Enjoy.

That is outstanding work, and I agree - it's the perfect level of restoration. Inspires me to re-examine a couple of projects I've had sitting for too long.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It's perfect! Very unique to see such nice work on a Favorite, but I do like the overall appearance!

Lots more labor-intensive that just sending it out for a garish color-case job!    I wish I could afford to bid what I think it's worth.

Interesting thought.   Both my 1915s have full-octagon barrels, and are post-Savage-buyout.   Would a 1915 made pre-Savage have used the late '94 style half-octagon?  Dunno.   Worth some more research.

Added:   I emailed him to ask if he knew the provenance of the barrel,  but he doesn't know.

1919 catalog--which I think is the last pre-Savage ed.--shows only full-oct.

That puts an upper bound on it, maybe.  Was there a 1915 catalogue?   Anybody have one?

On such minutiae do our very lives depend.   Grin

I've always thought that the last Stevens "General Catalog" was #54--mainly because I've never seen a #55; though "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence," the dictum in archaeology.

#54 must be about 1915, but it's un-dated of course, as was Stevens' evil penchant.  It shows the same full-oct. brl. as the 1919, though for 50 cents less a round brl. was available; but no half-oct. listed...though even that could undoubtedly be had by special order & extra cost.
