Low wall with Rigby Flats

I know that it was the Ballards that came with Rigby Flats but I decided that I'd change it up a little.   I'm building another low wall in a .22 rf this winter.  The barrel is from RKS, the action is a mix of pieces and parts, some I made, some scrounged off eBay, etc.  The wood came from a blank I don't recall where...   never done a barrel with Rigby flats.  Tongue  I have great deal of respect for the boys of old now, I used a mill, dividing head, and a rotary table to rough it in, but the bulk of it was done with files, it's labor intensive.  I'll try to post more as the project progresses.

I remember an earlier post someone asking what the flats were used for, a reply was to get a good bite with a pipe wrench...  Grin

What I assumed, first time I saw one, was that a special, fitted, wrench was provided for easy brl. removal, something like the ones used with screw-barrel percussion pistols.  Since the idea was copied from percussion Rigbys, I wonder if Rigby provided such a wrench?  Otherwise, if they have no purpose at all, I don't get it.  "Attractive"?  I don't think so, although of course they do demonstrate metal-working skills.

Absolutely beautiful work. My hat is off to you.
Would not be so difficult if you would purchase a million dollar five axis CNC machine. Wink
About the only other way to do it. Great machine and hand work.

I personally love the Rigby flats, and find them very attractive for a deluxe rifle. Marlin's flats on the Rigby Ballard were a setion of tube with the flats machined into it. Then the inside of the tube was finely threaded and barrels were threaded to match. Once secured to the barrels they were polished and no sign on the outside of the barrel can be found. But if you pulled the  forearm wood you can easily see where the Rigby flats tube starts.
Remington Hepburns and Rolling Blocks could also be ordered with Rigby flats, so it's not just a Ballard or Rigby thing.

Not only nice work (and a big effort to machine) but will take as much work again to get polished for bluing. Very well done and looking forward to your 'finished product' pic's.

In the March - April Single Shot Rifle Journal Vol.59, No 2 and starting on page 22 Steve Durren has a real nice article that includes the making of Rigby Flats as a part of this project rifle series. Clearly written and fully described along with pictures of his setup etc. If one is thinking about doing the same I believe you can still purchase this back issue from the ASSRA and we'll worth the effort and cost.

I did a 'faux" Rigby flat on a 77 Sharps bu using a 1/2 inch end mill to cut the slot in the barrel. Then a 3/8 x 60 degree dovetail in the botton of the slot. Then machined the "flat" to dovetail into the slot. I know this isn't the correct way as the above but I was pressed for time and when I was finished you couldn't tell it from factory. Made a practice piece to prove out my methods first. Couldn't afford to screw up an expensive Badger barrel.

Thanks for the kind words, I look forward to the posts that other members put out there of projects they have going and the ideas these stimulate for me, I try to return the favor.
Redsetter, I do agree with you, when I first really noticed a firearm with the flats on them, I thought they were hideous and unless they had a reason, like switching barrels, why go to all the effort.  Like many features found on firearms, they grow on you.  I still DO NOT like engraving on a firearm, Harry Pope made a comment referencing that it served no purpose... Checkering... still not a fan of that either...  wedding band on a barrel, I've done a few, again no purpose but a little tiny oddity, stops observant people and identifies character.  Integral quarter rib and banded front sight, a lot of work, but it adds a twist making up a custom feature.  There's more and I'm sure as I wander around these forums and in and out of some of the shows I go to - there will be more  HMMM's

Greg

Love the work and the set-up. Makes me want to buy a good sized rotary. Any problems with support with that long barrel out there when spinning ? Id love to make a longrange rolling block with Rigby flats. Best

Zack,
It's a 12" rotary table and I had about 9" between the v-blocks, support wasn't a problem but then again there wasn't much being machined off.  It was more for an outline so I could keep my lines straight and my circles round.  A new quality file, chalk, and a file card, (spare fingers would be nice) help things go smoother.

JMH,
It's funny you brought that up, a friend that I have been corresponding with said he's going to do like you described and "locktite them" in place.

SSS,
I have to confess, Ron talked me into Stainless for this barrel, I've messed with coloring this back in my bolt gun days but I'm not going to do it here.  I'm going to do a polish to 320 grit then a bead blast dusting, CC the receiver and pieces, a simple Linseed hand rub on the wood and hopefully have a shooter.

Harry Pope didn't like much on a gun that didn't serve a specific purpose. And that's partially because he was a shooter, and partially because he could never do finish work. The guns that he personally assembled completely often had poorly shaped and finished stocks, and metal surfaces were mush less finished than other great gun makers work.
But when it came to finishing parts that made a gun work better, he'd spend every hour needed to make them perfect!
