Beautiful Borchardts!  One can tell his work cause often he replaced the center pin on the cocking plates with a screw.  So did I as I'm trying to incorporate his good ideas into my rifle.

A question I have is I'd like to use a Zischang stock ala what CPA sell but don't know how good it would be off the bench.  Comments?

You can shoot any stock off the bench.  I shoot a Ballard  similar to this (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

You just have to work a bit harder at it to shoot 250s and compete with modern BR stocks.

If you can live with a wide forearm, it will help a lot on the bench, with a hooked plate. You can swap it out when not shooting bench. The other thing is to just put the biceps part of your arm, inside the hooks or shoot free recoil.

I built a Zischang clone using the CPA stock in 25-21 and have used it for benchrest I use a barrel sled which helps a lot  and remove the Zischang buttplate and replace with a thin brass flat pate . It takes a lot more effort to shoot but it will work. Biggest problem I had was one of our local ranges is up hill and had trouble with the rifle sliding down the rest.
No 250s  but fun to use.

I have been shooting a traditional design rifle for seventeen years and I have never felt I was taking a back seat to anything found on the line. I currently hold an ASSRA record, a past CBA National Champion and accumulated 174 top three finishes in CBA alone. There is a bit more difficulty in learning how to shoot one compared to a custom built benchrest rifle by design. But it is also well worth the effort if you have the desire and the heart for it and you too can very easily accomplish the same and yet more. I would also recommend having a custom front rest bag made to rest your barrel on as it is a big plus and also inexpensive to have David at Protektor USA make for you. If memory serves me right it only cost me $39.00 and I filled mine with 1/2 heavy sand and 1/2 Parkeet Gravel of which helps limit barrel jump and vibration and that combination has worked out very well for me.

Ballards may be weaker,

I swap off the Schoyen hooked buttplate for a plastic copy of a Ballard buttplate when shooting mine off the bench. I simply ordered a copy of the old Ballard hard rubber buttplate, and then heated it in boiling water to soften it. I took it out and taped it to the stock using gloves to allow handling it hot. Then after it cooled I drilled a pair of holes to match the buttplate and screwed it on. Filed off the excess to match it to the stock. Only takes a couple minutes to swap from one to the other.

How often do you make the change, Val?  I thought about that but when shooting of matches every year I was worried about were and tear running the wood screws in and out all the time.  At 16 pounds the rifle would be a bit awkward to shoot offhand without the original butt plate.

Since my buttplates use two different sets of holes it's not as bad as running screws into the  same holes for both plates. I use it almost exclusively with the Schoyen schuetzen offhand buttplate. Maybe once a year I shoot it extensively off cross sticks or bench, and then switch to the spare buttplate. I don't crank the screws down with a death grip for either buttplate.

That would definitively be a lot better than changing it several times during shoulder to shoulder matches several times a year.

The only place I have found the long prong butt plate a significant disadvantage is shooting about 6 degrees uphill at Tommy's in Spokane. Other flatter ranges it is easy to deal with as long as one keeps their wits about themselves  Roll Eyes

Mine is a .22LR Badger barrel, so haven't shot it past 500 yds. I can hear hits on the 400 yd. dinger, but just barely. The 500 yd. dinger is very tough to hear hits unless everyone is pretty quiet.

Another similar casting...

I've been chatting with my ol' friend again and asked him if he had any other such lever castings... and he recently came across this one and sent it to me with some other stuff. Still marked with the original price from yrs ago when purchased. He said the lump was for a Stevens 44. Glad to have it!

Wondering if Rodney recognizes this specific one?
