Zischang? lever casting for Ballard wanted...
Dec 8th, 2017 at 4:07pm
Print Post
Hi All,
I was able to buy the Zischang (?) style lever casting as a rough casting from an old friend - who in turn told me that he'd bought it from an old gent many moons ago... I had it fitted to this old cast receiver Ballard with an Anschutz Model 54 Super Match barrel. I'm looking for another of these lever castings if anyone knows where to get one? ... or better yet has one needing a home? Smiley

Otherwise, I'm thinking I'll talk to one of the foundries and have a few more cast up.

Comments.. thoughts?

Thanks again,
Jeff Pfeifer

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Not Zischang. Those levers have been attributed to HM Pope, as he seemed to use that style often.

An alternative is the "Pope" style grip adapters, which many old schuetzen rifles used. These mount to all sorts of standard levers to create the Pope style.
I buy these from Track of the Wolf in brass. They are designed to mount on muzzleloader schuetzen rifles, but easily cut and reworked to fit levers.

My Schoyen was missing the grip adapter, and had the holes welded up. I drilled and tapped the holes back in, and modified the TOW triggerguard to fit the original holes.

They also have these in steel that can be tig welded to a standard lever to modify it to a Winchester style schuetzen lever:

This one is also available in brass too!

Thanks Vall,

I've seen that Track of the Wolf lever too which is similar but different yet.. LOL The more common(?) Pope lever on my Stevens 45 is like the one here shown next to the one on the Ballard for comparison. Was this just his later style perhaps?

I think Rodney is correct. More like a Walker than a Pope lever.

Nice... Is there enough in that lump on the end for the Ballard link ears... or will it need to be built up? Wondering what action that lump is patterned for? Are these cast from 8620?

Can't resist, again. Certainly cheaper than fabricating one, but still considerable work.

A nice rifle indeed Chuckster!

I know I spent alot of time working over that cast lever on the Ballard... welding up a few voids in the casting then straightening it... still wanting to lengthen the one tine behind the rear trigger. then finish the detail filing. I will stock it first though... so I can see how it shoots!

I know the guy that had those made about 30 years ago.  I think he made it to be adaptable to any action you care to use it on.

LOL! Does he have any left? It is slightly different in form than the Walker-Hepburn pattern that Rodney showed us...

I just talked to another old gunsmith friend Dick and he corroborated your reply. He recognized the lever on the Ballard and said he bought a few of these 30+ yrs ago from a gent out West.

I talked to Dave about his Walker casting I think 2 years ago and asked if he was going to do some more castings and he told me NO
he was not going do anymore. I asked if he would sell the patterns and I never got an answer. Ken

I don't think he does unless he kept a few for possible personal use.  I doubt it, he quit shooting single shots many years ago because of health issues.   I'll let you know if I find out anything.

I made a mold for Dave Sheldon, for a walker lever grafted to a Winchester High wall it was thinner than the Walker lever but the same design. For what it is worth if you lay a Schalk percussion lever on top a Walker they are the same except walker added a couple of culicues. I think the mold was made in late eighties, so thirty years is about right.
