Liner pressure limitations?

Print Post
Hello Folks

If I was to have a Stevens #2 barrel (on an original 44-1/2 chambered in 22RF) relined to 38-55 with a 39/64ths liner what sort of loads would be safe in the rifle??

What would be a maximum safe pressure to reload to?

Thanks

Don't know, but I am wondering if having it Bored and Re-rifled would be an option?

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm down in New Zealand and none of the several barrelmakers here do rebores -  probably because they are all using the button rifling process? ?

The conventional wisdom is that liners that are standard rifled tubes, soldered or epoxied into straight drilled holes, can take pressures in the .30-30 range, say 36,000 psi or so.

"Liners" that are turned down barrels with the chamber area left extra thick, brazed into barrels step-drilled for fit, are supposedly able to handle higher intensities.

Problem is the action you have is not designed for the 38-55. There are three actions that have the extra hammer block that I have seen, 28-30, 32-40 and 38-55. These actions were designed for target loads with black powder pressures. I have had more than one come in that was chambered in 38-55 that was not safe to shoot anymore because it had been fired with to much pressure.
A close fitting liner will take the pressure of factory 38-55.

The 44-1/2 action can't normally handle a reasonably-loaded .38-55?

My bad, I was thinking 44, not 44&1/2. The 44&1/2 will handle 38-55 with no problem.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Most commercial liners that are chambered for the cartridges they are intended for will stand SAAMI pressuresfor those cartridge on their own. The problem comes when the liners are chambered for cartridges they were not intened for. If the fit of the liner in the chamber area is appropriate,  they will be as strong or stronger than the original barrel. I usually bore the chamber area of the barrel for a lite press fit and drill, ream the rest of the barrel. If you have a concern it might behoove you to ask the liner manufacturer his recommendations.

Just to make things interesting:
I think the problem can be approached as the summed hoop stresses.
Knowing the hardness and therefore the strength of both components calculate
the hoop stresses and sum.
First for the liner probably using the formula for thin walls then for the
barrel to be lined using the thick wall calculation.
The original barrel after being reamed may be on the border between thick wall
and thin wall. I think I'd try both and then make a reasoned decision.
YMMV
