Below is an adapter that could be used to  correct the headspace problem without a need to modify the forend or mainspring. 
This adapter was an experiment on a 22 LR Maynard and so was removable In your case it would be locked in place by Loctite and  machined for the extractor.
After fitting the adapter, it is chambered, so that the front of the 22 LR cartridge case is inside the original barrel.
