what would you do with this rifle?

It's a nice little CC DST highwall I bought from a friend a few years ago.  It has original sighting equipment including a windgage front sight.  The barrel marking are done as though it was going to have a scope mounted on it.  The barrel is a 30" #4.

I shot a few nice targets with it back when I used to shoot the local offhand matches on Sundays.

My only problem is that left the factory as a .38-55, but the barrel has been rebored and chambered as a long throated .45-70.  The bore is excellent.  I just don't need a long throated .45-70 offhand rifle Smiley.

More recently I've used it with a Crossno .22LR liner.

Originally I was going to put a Ron Smith barrel on it and chamber it to .38-55 as it was originally made.  I don't know if I want to mess with it though.

What would you do with it?

Chris.

I'd line it also, but I'd do it a bit differently.

I'd order a special barrel, turned to about .625 or .750 or so from my maker of choice, in the twist/groove configuration I preferred.  Then, I'd send it to John Taylor, and have him install that barrel as a liner.

I had him do that with a .40-70 with a rotted out barrel, and the job that he did was superb.  The rifle came out as a better shooter than it would have been from the factory.

Do the Ron Smith barrel but make it a .35 Remington rimmed.  Why? Because it's easy to make out of Krag or 303 Brit brass and it's different. Ron likes to do something different once in a while.

Really neat rifle by the way. Drooling a little here.

If it were mine, and everything was original except the rebore. I'd hunt with it as is. Nice looking rifle, and the rebore may trim a few ounces off the front end. If it got sent out, I'd send it for a reline more to take it back to a little bit like it was when it left the factory. Classic lines, if needed maybe rebarrel and save the original for who knows what in the future.

What he said. Very nice rifle. Might go with a pistol-grip stock, but nothing else.

Am doing exactly that with my original Hepburn that started life as a 32-40. Lining it back to the original cartridge.

How did you contact Ron? I did not realize he made liners in anything other than .22.

I would talk to Ron Smith about making a 38-55 liner for it and just do that. Would be a good shooter and I like the looks of it as is. You retain the look of the gun which is pleasing and you have a pleasant shooting cartridge. Also- if you took a top flight shooter and gave him that gun with a good shooting 38-55 liner in it he would still turn on top flight scores. The full dress schuetzen rifle is nice but you take a gun that is really good at a lot of things and turn it into a gun that is great at only one thing

I do like the RKS liner idea.  If I went with a new barrel I'd be really tempted to have the rest of the rifle restored.   Another thought I had last night was to find a good original #4 barrel in .38-55 or .32-40 and screw it on.  Part of the "problem" is that I already have a new .38 cal gain twist RKS barrel sitting in Steven Durren's shop.  That barrel is also a project waiting to happen.

I should probably just box it up and send it to you Jack. Smiley

Chris.

Yessir I will be there.  I didn't put that rifle on my U.S. gov't paperwork though so I will likely just bring my CPA and probably my old Ruger #1.

Can't just add it at the border these days?

I would sell it to someone who would appreciate it for what it is and use it. Then I would take the $$$ and get exactly what I wanted.
