Barrel boring/rifling lathe

Hi all,
I have the chance to buy a LARGE machine and need some info.
It is a Pratt & Whitney no. 1/2BX50.
It will drill/ream/rifle up to a .75 inch hole, up to 50 inches long.
It has 2 complete set-ups on one machine so it can work on 2 barrels at a time.
Seems to be a machine made for production work.
Can anyone help me with info and possibly a value?
Thanks,
Dave

I think you'll find that it is just a deep hole drilling machine. You can also ream on this machine. A rifling machine is different and you'll need both to make barrels.

Now if you could find a Pratt & Whitney sine bar rifling machine to go with the other one you'd be a long way to making your own barrels. Probably have to do a rebuild job on the sine bar as I think the last ones were made during WWII. Frank

When I was in the machine tool rebuilding business in the '80s, we saw a couple or three of these. By the time they came to us they needed $75,000 worth of work to make them serviceable again.   Be careful.

I have been getting some barrels from X-caliber, a new company in Montana. They went with new CNC machines and from what I understand, can bore five barrels at a time.  There are a few old machines out there but as stated before it would probably cost as much to restore one as it would cost to buy new. Rifling machines are not that complicated to build from scratch and there are plans available. I built mine with no plans and it seems to do good for me.
Talked to an old barrel maker many years back and was asking him about a boring machine for rifle barrels and he says " start with an old 6 cylinder engine block". Then went on to say how to turn it over and use the bearings for the spindle.
You would need to make lots of barrels to justify the expense of a Pratt and Witney but I would still love to have one.

Thanks for the replies.
I can get the lathe for less than $1500 and was looking to make a quick turnover on it.
More of a potential investment than a machine for me.
Thanks again,
Dave

Ron Smith uses a dual Pratt&Whitney beep hole drill. One side is used for drilling an the other is set up for reaming.
Much of it has been redone/redesigned by Ron to serve his requirements. Hell of a solid old machine.
