Making Dies for Hand lube pumps

Can anyone offer any suggestions for turning inside tapers for bullet dies for a lube pump? Straight bullets are relative easy but taper bullets seem to be a problem.

Thanks,
Kurt

Taper pin reamer? A couple will cover a wide range of calibers, taper is 1/4" per foot.

It's relatively simple to do

Measure the length of your compound rest

Use an online trig calculator to to convert your bullet/taper length to equivalent compound rest length

Mount an indicator in the lathe chuck indicating on the compound rest and make the adjustments to match the calculation.

Turn the taper using the compound infeed

..................................................
If your one of the few lucky enough to have a taper attachment on your lathe its the same process scaled up to the length of the taper attachment.

Another method is to bore the die in steps. Measure the diameter of each band and its location. Then bore a hole X diameter Y deep and another cut at XX diameter YY deep, etc. This also works out nice when the bullet isn't a straight taper, such as the one I did last night. .367 on the front three bands and then .370, .373, and the base .378.

Also, I make my dies out of delrin that is a tight fit in the lube pump and then I don't need O-rings.

Very simple. Almost as simple as pan lubing.

I like Bob's idea best but, I like pan lubing better Smiley

Another thing you can do is just bore 2 diameters. The rear band size the length of all but the front band and then just the front band so, it's sealed on both ends. No ones going to know it has a couple of thousands more luube on the first couple of bands.

Frank,
Thought I was being sneaky doing that and was not going to tell. May put one more step in the die.

I use an adjustable reamer to do mine. There is a long tapered lead on them and if you are careful it works pretty well.

The only reason to have a Hand lube pump, is because you did not bring enough pan lubed bullets to the shoot.

Lubing bullets at the bench gives you something to do while you are waiting for cr@ppy wind conditions to improve! Wink

Ok, but what if you run out of lubed bullets while conditions are stable?
