Sorry, not single shot related, but .... I'm looking for a gunsmith who will re-chamber my Savage 23D rifle from .22 Hornet to .22 K-Hornet. Please reply here just in case another poster/member needs this job done too. T.I.A.

One of my earliest efforts at Rifle building Single Shots was a Winchester Lowall. I built a .22 Hornet. Took a while to find a good Mold that would shoot well, 225418  48 Grs Memory ??
I got it shooting very well with 9.5 Grs 2400. Then I was exposed to the K Hornet. So Borrowed the Chamber Reamer and chambered my Rifle to K and guess what? The best shooting load was still 9.5 Grs 2400 so I gained nothing. that was 30 years ago and I still own that rifle. Do not shoot it much
and someday if I find a really nice original Lowall Barrel in 25-20 SS or 32-20 guess what it will become? HTH Regards, FITZ Smiley

Thanks FITZ.
We both know, tho, that "leaving well enough alone" is not always in our Grand Plan Wink
But, your suggestion is a good one.

going to k hornet has advantageous. head space off shoulder, not rim, less brass stretch. I have done three and do not regret any. others have different thoughts. ymmv. I also have a pair of k hornets in 17 with 35 degree shoulder.

Was it Ackley who said that having less taper in the case walls reduces bolt head thrust? If so, the K Hornet might be a good choice for a weaker action. Please correct me if I've mis-remembered this. It's been 20 years or more since I read his books.

I see the .22 K-Hornet to be more virtuous Cool than its parent. But going back to the original request: who can cut a chamber for me?

Same experience.  A Contender pistol would eat up standard shape brass in 3 firings, sometimes on the first firing.  Converting to "K" allowed me to headspace it on the shoulder, and brass now lasts a lot longer.  How much?  I don't know, since I haven't had a head separation since, after 6 or 7 firings.

To the O.P. - rent a reamer and do it yourself.  It's the easiest rechamber job I know of.  Can be done free-hand if you've got a steady grip and can detach the barrel, which isn't too hard on a Model 23.

If I recall the 23D correctly you may need an extension rod to get the reamer into position.

Loosen the barrel nut, then unscrew the barrel.  The nut requires a special wrench most of the time, however.

Otherwise, yes, you need an extension.

OLReliable,

I should be able to do the work for you. Give me a call at Johnson's Sporting Goods 517-265-2545 and we can talk about it.

On the 23D the receiver and barrel are one piece of steel.

I stand corrected.  I thought the 23D was the introduction of the barrel nut.
