Is there anyone out there that can make a full octagon Winchester no. 2 wt. barrel in 357 maximum?  This is for a low wall action.  I cant find the Badger Barrel website.  Are they still making barrels?  Most companies like Green Mountain will only take a minimum order of 100 for custom work.

You can get it done by:

Ron Smith
RKS Enterprises
P.O. Box 635
Wimborne, Alberta
T0M 2G0
403-631-2405

For gain or straight twist precision choked cut rifled barrels in chrome moly or stainless steel.
Ron will cut rifle an octagon custom barrel; but you or someone else will need to finish the draw filing and polishing before you have it blued.
He does not do the finishing work on the octagon barrel, but he can chamber it to .357 maximum for you.

CPA will do it for you and their barrel prices are more than fair. Give Gail a call, her and her dad are great people to work with and they stand behind their work. Pricing can be found on their web site, the below link should get you there. Badger has been gone for several years now.

The Krieger barrel I ordered in 44cal last month has a delivery date of mid-October. However, I ordered exactly what I wanted for weight, length and twist, but my gunsmith will have to make it octagon when he installs and chambers the barrel as Krieger only sells round. The upside is that Krieger barrels are as good as anything out there. You could also check with McGowen Precision Barrels in Kalispell, MT, BRC in Silver City, NM and Classic Barrels in Prescott, AZ.

I'd hope this .357 maximum barrel on a Low wall is going to be loaded like a .38 Ballard Extra Long? Or maybe with black powder?

Jerry Hartwig has shot 6 ea. 250's with his Douglas Barrel that he chambered in 25 WCF and it was purchased from CPA. I beg to ask how much better could another makers barrel be for our use. My own perssonel accomplishments to numerous to mention over the past 15 years including a National Championship and a new ASSRA record after having over 140,000 bullets down the bore have also been provided by a Douglas barrel and I have never wanted for more. Granted there are other barrel makers out there with some being twice the cost but you don't get twice the performance or an increase for that matter. Just my perssonel exsperiance and I have had some of the others.

Am guessing that you & Jerry H would both have done the same thing with any quality barrel. Lots more goes into a consistently winning score then the barrel and lots of good barrels out there.

I do octagon and half round/octagon. Anyone with a mill and indexing head should be able to do an octagon barrel from a blank.

I've bought several barrels (2 in custom twists) from CPA - great service, reasonable prices, and fast turn around. You can't go wrong buying from them.

From what has been reported (unless things have changed, recently), regarding CPA's stock and Douglas's supply. You can not get a proper .315 x .321 (bore/groove) barrel from them.

Frank,

I'm not trying to start anything, honest. I just really would like to know.

What is a "proper" groove diameter for a 32-40?

I know that for a number of years (from barrel manufactures) a groove diameter of ~.321 was "correct".

Now Douglas and, if I'm not mistaken, BRC barrels are being shipped at ~ .319.

As an aside, I have an original Marlin Model 1893 (lever gun) that has a groove diameter of .319. And a Lyman mould for it that casts a .319 bullet.

If the bores really are that all over the place (my loading manuals certainly are), what is correct?

Again, not trying to start a p.....g match, just curious. Honest.

Hi Jerry,
I understand what your saying. I have a 44 Stevens 32/40 with a like new original bore that measures .319 x .315 and a 32 Remington that is .323 groove, I never measured the bore. I also have a bunch of Lyman/Ideal molds but, the smallest 319xxx cast .320. I have a 321232 that casts .324.

What I ment by "proper" is the modern (1970's on) bore and groove used in match shooting. Most mold makers make a 32 mold for the .321 groove and many companys stock molds for that groove size. My comment was mainly aimed at matching a mold to a 32 barrel.

Historically 32 cal is a VERY loose term, running from Remingtons 32/40 (basically .309) Winchesters 32/20 (.311/.312) on one end and some of the Ballards and custom, golden age barrels that run as large as .330+. I believe that Winchesters standard was .321 for 32 Special and 32/40.

I have 4 Douglas 32 cal barrels that I bought in the 80's, all are .321 x .315.

If the barrel makers have changed there standard for 32 cal, I don't now when it happened but, I remember, within the last 2 - 3 years, people have been complaining of Doulas barrels having grooves under .321.

So, I was saying "proper" meaning that there is probably more .321 32 cal barrels out there. It seems that there has never been a standard for any 32 barrel.

I hope that at least clears up what I ment.

Since the subject as come up, I'm trying to find a spitzer mold for a new shooter that has a .320 groove. I would like to find one that has a base band no larger than .321.
