Another Ballard rimfire

I thought some of you would like to see some pictures of this project I just completed. It's on its way to its new home tomorrow.

The action is an original Marlin with a new lever. Barrel is a Douglas premium, full octagon with tulip. American black walnut stock. Color case hardened action. Rust blued barrel. Vintage sights and Unertl blocks. Weight, 8&1/2 pounds.

Steve, wonderful job.  Did you do the case coloring too?  I'd be interested to know who did that part of it.

What caliber?  Or did I miss that?

Thank you.

I did the color case hardening. It's a .22LR.

Very nice, Steve! Do you CC in the shop or do it outside of work?

Where did you get the lever? I would love to have one.

I did a double take, Steve when I saw your beautiful rifle.  except for the scope blocks & tang sight, ( mine has dbl. set triggers)  it's a dead ringer for my own original No. 3 in .25-25 Stevens..pictured in Dutchers book.  Uncanny..even the feather crotch matches!

Thank you for all the compliments.

I do the color case hardening in house. The lever came from a no longer viable source. Sorry.

The client asked me to make the rifle look just like figure 12-6 on page 122 of Dutcher's book. This action had a single trigger so we stayed with that detail. I was able to find a blank that matched quite well.

I can't imagine the owner, or any Marlin lover wouldn't be tickled to death by what you achieved! Absolutely gorgeous work Steve!
Are you using anything on the receiver to seal it? Looks like a nice color, and not as dull as bare casehardened receivers usually are.

Oh my! You sir are a true master at your craft. Can't imagine what it probably cost but only that it is worth every pretty penny. Curious and don't mean to pry but how many hours do you have in it? Again a one of a kind creation and congratulations to the new owner on a fine specimen.

Steve, I can now add you to the very short list of people who do case coloring that looks "Right".

Thanks again for the many compliments.

marlinguy, I don't put any coating on after I color case harden. The metal is polished to 320 or 400 grit and then rubbed with gray Scotchbrite and then steel wool. I do of course oil afterwards as the process burns off any oil.

jhm, Sorry,I don't keep track of my hours. I charge a specific amount for each operation, so much to fit the barrel, so much to contour the barrel, so much for the stock, etc.

rollingblock, Yes, I'm always looking for more work. If your interested in having me do some work for you give me a call at Johnson's Sporting Goods, 517-265-2545

bnice, Sorry, I'm not making Ballard levers. I can't let the cat out of the bag but at least ball and spur levers MAY be available soon from a very reliable source.

UtahDave, The rifle is going to a gentleman in Wisconsin who doesn't frequent this board but he will be shooting it.
