I would like everyone to please understand, I am not trying to drag him or his reputation through the mud. He's a respected member of the community and that's not something easily earned.
The reason for bringing this back up in July was making sure he's OK. I was told via an intermediary at that time they were being worked on and have heard nothing since. The distinct lack of communication (apparently he had a computer meltdown and neither detailed voice mail has been returned) worried me. I've been down the road of dealing with an estate (a knifemaker who died after receiving my payment but before the knives went out) and it was no fun at all.

awp101,
There is something you really need to learn, when a good and busy gunsmith estimates a job will be ready in 2 months, 6 months or a years time. Take the estimate with a large pinch of hope and wait and see.
Gunsmiths have absolutely no concept of time, with many, it's their only failing as their workmanship is superb. When I used to get asked to do a job and the next question was, 'How long will it take' my answer was always, 'I don't know, your at the end of a queue, some jobs may take less time than first thought, others several times as long as I thought'.
I am very well aware of an ETA being just that, an estimate. I deal with that on a weekly basis at work where a fab shop is part of our operation. But we also communicate with the customer if there's going to be a delay (parts delay from the factory, flaw in the design, the fab shop guy got mauled by a rabbit, whatever).
Your standard answer of 'I don't know, your at the end of a queue, some jobs may take less time than first thought, others several times as long as I thought' is a great and honest answer. Another good plan is the "Send your deposit and you'll be put into line and I will call you when it's time to send your stuff in to be worked on".
