	Second vote for torching, though I will say it's a fair attempt at imitating the common Stevens "ripple" pattern. WJL

	I think that would be very difficult to do with a torch, but it does not look correct. I don't think it came out of the Stevens factory that way

	I saw a thing on the boob toob last week about how they make reproduction Colt revolvers. They showed the frames being dipped in an etching solution and then were dipped in a salts. Think that's what they said. They said it was to make the parts look case hardened. It looked a lot better than the sample shown in the link. Soon as I saw the thing on TV I thought of the Italian reproductions. Pretty sure it was a program called "How It's Made" Joe.

	Fortunately there are very few of these 'torched' single shots around, this form of 'prettifying' is far more frequently found in double shotguns and is a source of constant annoyance with the double barrelled shotgun folks, who love their old side by sides, but hate it when they are torched. All the torch job does is show tempering colours, no hardening takes place at all. Fortunately this practice doesn't seem to occur in Britain,,,,, Yet. It doesn't take much practice with a fine tipped oxy acetylene torch to become fairly competent at it either. Harry

I know that programme Joe, the salts you refer to are of molten Potassium or Sodium Cyanide. I wouldn't even want to be in the same building as that. Cyanide gas is what they used in the USA in the States that had execution by gas chambers. Not a nice way to die. Harry.
