I was going to contact 38_Cal but I see he hasn't been here in over a year and I don't know how to contact him.

Who else is recommended?

Thanks!

Wish 38_Cal would come back. We miss his good advice. Would think most any of the competent SS gunsmiths could do it. Not terribly complicated, but a little tricky. Firing pin and breech face are not at right angles. Did it once per 38_Cal's instructions and worked well.

I am going to recommend that you be in communication with Mr. John Taylor d/b/a Taylor Machine Works (Shop).

Unequivocally, a top machinist and gunsmith who knows both trades, and Single Shot rifles.

John did a set of Stevens pivot pins better than Joshua Stevens did.  His contact info is listen in the vendor section.

Sorry, I forgot to update this.  I did make contact with 38_Cal via and he should receive both of my breech blocks today or tomorrow.

Thanks for the help! Smiley

2-3 week turnaround estimate is now 2 months and no contact.  Based on his reputation I don't suspect wrong doing but I'm concerned something has happened.

Anyone heard from him lately?

awp101,
There is something you really need to learn, when a good and busy gunsmith estimates a job will be ready in 2 months, 6 months or a years time. Take the estimate with a large pinch of hope and wait and see.

Gunsmiths have absolutely no concept of time, with many, it's their only failing as their workmanship is superb. When I used to get asked to do a job and the next question was, 'How long will it take' my answer was always, 'I don't know, your at the end of a queue, some jobs may take less time than first thought, others several times as long as I thought'.  Undecided

Give any figure quoted by a gunsmith three times what he stated, you may be nearer the delivery time.  Smiley you will get it returned eventually.  Cheesy

Never send any firearm to a gunsmith for working on unless you have a life expectancy of at least five years. You may not be around when it comes back. Roll Eyes

Well said Harry.
My other me builds custom air rifles and I estimate I'm two years behind.

Here is the fellow for martini work. He is good and fast and I have had several things done that were very reasonably priced.

I would like everyone to please understand, I am not trying to drag him or his reputation through the mud.  He's a respected member of the community and that's not something easily earned.

The reason for bringing this back up in July was making sure he's OK.  I was told via an intermediary at that time they were being worked on and have heard nothing since. The distinct lack of communication (apparently he had a computer meltdown and neither detailed voice mail has been returned) worried me.  I've been down the road of dealing with an estate (a knifemaker who died after receiving my payment but before the knives went out) and it was no fun at all.

I am very well aware of an ETA being just that, an estimate.  I deal with that on a weekly basis at work where a fab shop is part of our operation.  But we also communicate with the customer if there's going to be a delay (parts delay from the factory, flaw in the design, the fab shop guy got mauled by a rabbit, whatever).

Your standard answer of 'I don't know, your at the end of a queue, some jobs may take less time than first thought, others several times as long as I thought' is a great and honest answer.  Another good plan is the "Send your deposit and you'll be put into line and I will call you when it's time to send your stuff in to be worked on".

Another good smith is Steve Durren. He's always bushing breechblocks of one sort or another. 517-265-2545 @ Johnsons Sporting Goods Adrian MI.

I used Vic Samuel this fall for a Martini job. Mine was the last one he did before he went south.  Contact him again in the spring.

just a couple comments:

a "gunsmith" who is NOT busy is one to beware of.  It's only a generality because there may be some extreme specialists who only work on specific jobs of their own choosing.

I never send a "project" off with a deadline,  the gunsmith I have dealt with most is indeed an artist.   I'd rather give him the time to do it right and well than rush the job.

Knowing that we are all mortal and fallible Cheesy;  I always document and photograph the bits and pieces I send in just incase I might have to retrieve my items from an estate executor or a legal process at a later date.   Or in case MY estate needs to know what I have done.
Obviously this is no comment on the life or career expectancy of any of the parties involved Wink
