Anyone know a good stock maker that might be willing to teach a beginner. There are probably some tricks of the trade that would make my hacking and whacking look better and easier.
thanks,

How could any professional spare the time? Unless he was being well compensated for the distraction.

Not sure where you are located, but I know Cabin Creek Muzzleloading shop in PA has gunsmithing/rifle building classes geared towards front stuffers.
I would think the experience in wood working would transcend genres.

Steven Dodd Hughes held a class for a small group last year. I believe there is a thread on the Accurate Reloading forum under gunsmithing.

I seem to remember that the NRA offered various gunsmithing seminars. I don't know if they still do that.

Back when Steve Durren did that series of serialized articles in the Journal on building schuetzens, "The affordable schuetzen" Converting a Mil Roller to a very elegant civilian sorting model, the one he did on a large frame martini, etc he always went into a lot of detail in laying out and creating a stock form a blank. obtaining and reading those articles would be a step in the right direction.
Steve could easily have qualified for the Gun Makers Guild as a stock maker.
