Seems to me that Unertls always commanded a higher price.

Not 30 years ago.  By the time production ended in the '90s, there was no direct competition from Feckers or Lymans.

Here's the last price list I received.

Hey, but you get free shipping.

Whatever the scope is actually worth, the case is worth 50% of that--maybe more.

And a couple Civil War sniper scopes, come to think of it.

bought a 10x Unertl with an extra 6x eye piece for $100 15 years ago for a guy who had just read Carlos Hathcock's book & wanted to build a "sniper" rifle, charged him $175, 6 months later he changed his mind and sold it back to me for $75. I still use it on my 22 rim fire hiwall. I also have a 20x STS, I like them both.

Including one of these?

The obvious fact that the scope does not at all match the illustration pasted in the box, or that the A5 tube has been fitted to Lyman mounts, won't trouble the sniper-nuts who'll be bidding--they don't sweat the small stuff.

The tube itself was originally part of a bore-scope--the scraped metal adjacent to the eyepiece was the location of a tightly-fitted brass bushing; the small, drilled spot in the tube wall accommodated a set-screw.  All this is clearly visible in the illustration.

I have started this addiction you call single shots 5 or 6 years ago. I went to a shoot in Eau Claire and that was it. I have spent 800 and 900 for unertl scopes  and even a little more but that was what I had to do to keep up in the crazy game. Please tell me what you payed for you single shots years ago. Can you still buy them for that today??
I friend told me once when I told him I think I paided to much for something, did you want it. could you afford it. Well then you didn't pay too much. Tommy Auger

Tommy," Please tell me what you payed for you single shots years ago. Can you still buy them for that today??"
A very good point. I went to "acquisition  mode" about 15 years ago, when I had a real job (not that retirement is a bad job). I had in mind that after I retired, it wouldn't be as easy to write a check for a few grand for a single shot rifle. As it turns out that strategy has worked out rather nicely. I realize now that in most cases the guns and scopes I've collected are worth more than today's money. I've also learned to keep in mind how much it would cost to replace something before I sell it. Now I only sell things in order to fund new toys. I have two scopes that will be going on e-pay soon to fund the new DZ Arms 8x scope that I can't live without..... how many scopes do I need ? , just one more.

Everyone complains about inflation, which of course has many causes (chiefly the reckless printing of money), but one of the lesser causes has got to be the refusal of most of this country's population to say "NO!--the price is too high and I won't pay it!"  (Like, for example, the Japanese are said to do.) I'm no better at practicing self-denial than anybody else, but try, at least, not to trick myself with easy rationalizations.  Buying today because you fear the price will be higher tomorrow is the classic recipe for out of control price spirals.  (Like all those home-buyers who HAD to have the McMansion, then ended up after the recession "under water"; they got exactly what they deserved.)

I've had several instances over the years that I passed on guns because I thought they were perhaps a few hundred dollars too much. In virtually all those instances it was a mistake because the guns increased in value to match or exceed that price in a year or two. I ended up missing out on some nice guns because of a relatively small amount of money.  My advice to myself is to try to project what the value will be in a year or two, unless I JUST HAVE TO HAVE that gun.

I can tell you how to handle this, if you want the gun or scope and it costs too much deal with the fellow and get the best deal you can and buy it. Then do what you need to get the new worn off and put it in the back of the safe and forget about how much it cost. A couple of years later it will be worth more than you paid for it. The way things are going with our government right now it may not take that long because every time I go to buy something I bought last week the price has gone up. Problem solved.

That is your purpose in buying it?  Mighty sweet music to the ears of all the gun dealers.

"Mighty sweet music to the ears of all the gun dealers".
This is one of the reasons why antique guns have become good investments. I've done pretty well selling some of the guns and scopes I bought years ago, very much better than if I had put the money in a bank at 1-2% interest.
