What's the cure for an H&R  Trapdoor 1873 that springs open once in a while?
Thanks, Shorty

Could your loads be a little too hot maybe?

Thanks for the repies to my question, my H&R has never popped open even with full  Trapdoor loads. I have been reloading  since the mid 90's. I have loaded  many Marlin 45-70's and a couple of Browning B78's.  The Browning had a steel crescent buttplate, with fullhouse loads it was a bruiser to shoot. The Marlin was a bit easier and the Trapdoor was the most enjoyable to plink the big 500's out of.
The data I used for the Trapdoor was from the Lyman manual and the starting loads were always used.  I have sold the rifle and wanted to make sure that if there was a problem that there was a fix.
My next on the 45-70 list is an 1886 lever gun, maybe I shouldn't say lever gun on a single shot forum. Lips Sealed
Thanks again for all the great info, Shorty Smiley

it could be a weak or broken spring in the bolt lock.

Unlike an original the thumb piece is attached to the locking cam by a set screw that occasionally comes loose.  When the parts are loose the cam may not fully engage and the block can open on firing.  This is a known problem with the H&R.

I've never had to do one but I would take the thumb piece cam assembly apart to inspect the setscrew and the place where the set screw is supposed to seat and make certain the parts are serviceable.  If it is OK then reassemble with LockTite on the screw threads to keep it from backing out.  I've also heard that some have drilled through the axle of the cam and replaced the screw with a pin or even soldered the whole assembly together.  I've even heard that it may be replaceable with an original assembly though I suspect this wouldn't be as straight forward as it sounds.  At the least inspect and Locktite the assembly.
