Looks nice, but what is with the stamping, "J.M PHILLIPS SAC" in addition to the HM Pope stamping?

Ron

Did Pope do his own brass castings or did he machine the brass body?
Is it possible that that added name is the company that supplied the brass body to Pope's design?

I doubt if Pope was casting his own parts, since he was essentially working out of his garage in Hartford, and there were many casting companies near Hartford at that time. He did have the patterns for the lubricator and for the universal bullet mold and probably provided them to the casting company when he wanted a run of castings made. The patterns for the bullet mold were destroyed in San Francisco, but Stevens made some lubricators, so those probably remained in Chicopee Falls.

"The Story of Pope's Barrels" by Ray Smith, page 46 shows a picture of the patterns, castings, and completed lubricator. The picture of the patterns for universal bullet mold is on page 45. I'll try to attach a picture.

The other name was probably the person it belonged to, I have one with the individuals initials, he also apparently put the gun serial numbers (last 3 digits) on them sometimes. JMO

That's not uncommon. My pope mold has the former owner's name carved into the wood handles.

There were two lube pumps sold by the same gentleman. One was marked Pope with the additional markings. The second was marked with just the numbers 187. Based on Kelver's "Respectfully Yours - H.M. Pope" page 31, there is a picture and caption indicating the #187 is a Stevens-Pope product and appears on several pumps associated with Stevens- Pope rifles. More as a product #  than being associated with a certain Pope rifle.   ?????

It may seem like a dumb question but I'd like to know. Some lube pumps extruded a ribbon rather that directly lubing the bullet. Why and how was the lube applied with the ribbon? With fingers?

I believe the main purpose for the ribbon was for lube wads.
