Stevens 44 .22LR Extractor Replacement

Hey guys,

I’m considering replacing the extractor in a Stevens 44 .22LR and have a few questions.  The rifle requires a type 3 extractor (listed by Wisners as a 12-3-CW with .290 hole & 5 degree bent head).  BTW, CPA also sells the same extractors and gets them from Wisners.  The extractor is currently on back order by CPA since neither they nor Wisners’ has them in stock at this time.  So once the necessary hand filing work is completed and the extractor fits the action and extractor slot, what is the best approach for cutting the rim seat?  Gail at CPA indicated that some guys use a Dremel but using a reamer was the preferred approach.  If using a reamer I’d be concerned about changing the dimensions of the chamber unless the reamer was modified to only cut the seat while ensuring the chamber was not touched; i.e., effectively eliminating future use as a chamber reamer.

So, if one used a modified reamer, the block and lever assembly would have to be removed to insert the reamer.  Therefore I assume the extractor alignment would be assured during cutting by installing it with only the lever screw or pin (mine is a two-piece pin).  So does anyone have a worn out .22LR reamer they’re willing to loan, donate or sell cheaply?  I'll certainly cover the shipping.

I also need one of these, & tried unsuccessfully to order one, but didn't realize the seat had to be cut by the user; for me, that just about queers the deal.

Don't use a RF reamer to cut the extractor, the side preasure will wallow out the chamber. Use round file by marking the sides of the extractor where the chamber meet it and blending it with the area of the small round file thats near the .224 dia.

Then buy a 9/32 end mill, set the extractor in a vise, so the area to be cut is parrallel to the vise jaw and put a .224 pin in the spindle bring it up to the extractor cut  untill it fits the cut out area, put the 9/32 end mill in the spindle. Bring it down untill it touches and then .047 - .050 more and your done.

Frank,

That's an excellent technique and makes sense with one more question.  Can the cut be made with a standard end mill rather than a ball end mill?  Remember, I'm asking from a novice point of view.

Sorry, Wayne. You need a standard end mill NOT a ball. I just did a quick search for 9/32 and didn't notice the ball  Smiley

Search on the same site and you'll find the right one.

I have purchased reamers for 22RF before that cut the rim seat only. It was set up for the 22 short case, so it could be used for finish headspacing of short, long or long rifle chambers. Don't recall having had to pay for a special grind.
