Just by chance does someone have this issue and is willing to scan a copy for me of the article on cast bullets for the 458 Win Mag?

Is this the greatest forum or not? Thanks Dale. PM sent with address.

I'll send you a copy as soon as I have it. I've a Ruger #1H that I am trying to get t shoot cast bullets with. I've tried 1:30 alloys from 500gr to 300gr but get leading in as little as 10 shots. All sized .459 but all my bullets are a bit loose in the size die. Lube was 50/50 Alox/beeswax. Powder was AA5744. Velocities 1400fps or less.

Next trials will be with a harder alloy and maybe a fiber wad.

Suggestions encouraged...

Ed -
I've been sizing a .460 and using WW + tin.  No leading with heavy loads.  Lighter loads with Unique are ok too.

Best accuracy has been with full loads and 485gr Lyman bullet.  Not to my advantage recoil wise.  Hence my interest in reading more.

I have looked for a long time for a 1H in 45-70 but not found one for an affordable price. So, there I was minding my own business and a 1H in 458 showed up for a quite reasonable price. I have no interest in shooting full bore loads but a heavy weight 45-70 like loads could be fun.

Maybe try a harder alloy and a gas check.

I think of the 458 as a belted 45-90. The case capacities are similar but not identical so, as usual, caution in working up loads is required. My cast bullet loads are mostly derived from 45-90 data and from Ken Waters' articles in Handloader. My notes from 1995 indicate a preference for H4198. As for full power loads, the Ruger 1H in 458 has less painful recoil than full power jacketed 47-70 loads in the Ruger 1S.

I use 30 grains IMR 4895 under a Lyman 530 grain plain base bore rider.

I have had 2 #1 tropical 458s and they both liked Lyman 457406 gc bulet cast from ww and linotype lubed with alox and 56 gr 3031. Killed and burried a lot of groundhogs with that load. Would consistently touch the first three shots then recoil would scatter things. Wish I still had either one of those Rugers.

Might be a simple answer and from one who has never fired a 458 mag but

Bullet .002 oversized 1/25 no antimony, light crimp and 4759 to 1250 fps how much more difficult could it be ? it's just a case the bullet can't read the head stamp. Standard 45/70 recipe adjusted for volume

Want to go fast, a much more difficult proposition

When I first got mine, I'd load 485gr GC up to 2100fps - could hit a 1-1/2" bottle cap at 75 yards using iron sights - until it beat up on me.

The .458 (in the #1) has a beautiful smooth tapered throat - well worth choosing the .458 over the .45-70 just for that feature.
