OK.......... the Wheeler trigger gauge arrived and I ran it six (6) times on my Hepburn's trigger. The average is 4.75#. While not horrible, is much too heavy for a good target trigger. Before lubing last week am sure it would have max'd out the gauge at 8#.
Also checked my High Wall SST. With no set it averages 5#. When set, it averages just under 8oz, which is pretty much the minimum on the gauge.
Same with the CPA DST. When set, it measures less than the gauge will indicate and am sure it is around 4oz, or so.

SSS,

What does it take to move the trigger without the hammer cocked?

That's the maximum amount that you have to work with in a spring replacement.  Anything more than that will have to come from changing the hammer sear notch angle.

Measures about 18-20oz (just over a pound). If I can take about a pound out of it with a trigger spring that is a step in the right direction. But, fear you are right and will have to have the sear touched up.

Dave,
Thank you, good thread. Always bellyached about my Hepburn set triggers. Discovered it takes over a pound to move the trigger unset. Bet they can be improved. Thanks again.

Chuck,

When I get a chance, I'll run through the Hepburn double set too.  I have one that I don't think works.  Come to think of it, I've never tried it that I recall.

It's an odd rifle, the barrel is very heavy, about half an inch bigger than the receiver.  It weighs about 18 or 20 pounds, and is in .38-55.  It is the prototypical buffalo rifle, but in a sub caliber?

It's had a hard life, but the bore is good.  Still has the long range tang sight, and the bottom half of a wind gage front on it.  I need the top half of that sight to make it work, but doubt I'll be able to afford one; will probably have to put on a repro.

I have seen trigger pulls go from good to bad when the gun is reblued. Takes a while to get the parts sliding smooth again. Another thing that causes hard trigger pulls is soft contact areas. If the parts have been honed through the case hardness the trigger pull will be higher. It is also very important that the sear( in this case, trigger) is at 90 degrees from the pivot point. The hammer notch is also figured from the trigger pivot point, varying as little as 1 degree can make the trigger pull hard or dangerously soft. I had a rifle in a while back that had the angles bad enough that if the trigger spring happened to break the gun would have fired. Then they had a screw pushing the trigger spring to adjust trigger pull. Not a safe setup.

Got the trigger spring from Dave (thank you) installed today and per the trigger pull gauge it is now at 3.5-3.75#, which is something I can live with for now. As John mentions in the previous post, it may 'wear in' over the next few weeks of shooting. Has a bit of creep, so we will see. If it doesn't settle in then it will go out to John for his magic.

Have heard from John Taylor who tells me he has gotten the trigger down to something around 1-1.5# consistently. Should be great. Looking forward to having the rifle back for load development over the off-season.
