Wilson Collection

I have a 1948 letter or provenance regarding a Stevens Model 53 that refers to the Wilson collection.  Anyone know who or what the Wilson collection was?

I'm not sure of the Wilson collection but if I were you I would start by calling Jim Goergen, and Gary Quinnlin. I hope I did not murder the names. Anyway. Gary is a big Stevens collector and so is Jim. One of these two fine collector's may know. Gary Quinlan-215-766-3403, Jim Goergens 507-433-9280.

Sounds like a really nice rifle. Post some pictures please.

Perhaps this guy Wilson--from google search on Wilson Antique Gun Collection--courtesy of Forbe's magazine and TSM in 2006.  It appears he's still in jail and his stuff got repo'd and autioned off.

i don't think it can be the same wilson as the letter is dated 1948 and the wilson in the article would have been a  small kid.

Duh!  You're right--Too soon old, too late, smart, or at least a case of senioritis.  Should have paid more attention to the date.

Makes you think, could the letter be a fake ?. Typed on old stock with old typewriter. Who knows buyer beware !

I do not think the letter is a fake. If you check around you are bound to find out just who this collecter was/ I'm sure he is not still alive. The price would be about correct for the time period also. One of my uncles used to get a mail order catalog that as a kid I just loved. Single shot rifles that were engraved or had other fine features dirt cheap. Back in the 50's though it seemed as a whole lot of money. If we had only known then what the prices would be now. My uncle had several old Stevens single shot rifles including several with Pope barrels. As a kid I did not know Pope from Zischang or any of the other greats but he did. And I remember the prices being really low, or low in comparison to the oing rate now.

The buyer was my uncle, Bill Bobbett, born 1923 died 2005.  Lived most of his life in Vista CA.  I'll have to get out the original letter to identify the seller.   I made the copy of the letter years ago and blanked out the names when I was a little more paranoid about identies than I am now.  I'm Steve Bobbett and can be reached at number46@cox.net or by phone at (760) 885-6689.  Photography is not my strong suit but I'll try to get some close ups in focus.

418steve:  The Forbes link certainly speaks to a Wilson collection, just one generaton too late.  I wonder if his father or grandfather is the 'Wilson' in queston.  Maybe he inherited their interest in firearms, just not their ethics.  Steve B.

Unfortunatly, Wilson is a common name. My first thought was L. E. Wilson who does fit the time frame, but it's just a guess; (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Thanks to all for opinions and leads.  I guess 'Wilson' wasn't such an obvious reference to a well known collector as the 1948 seller thought it was.  Steve b

Steve, Wilson could have been a large collector of the time frame, just misplaced in history. And the web is only as good as the stuff someone else has input. Remember it is a computer so garbage in garbage out. I'm sure if Wilson was a large colletor he had to advertise in some national publication such as the American Rifleman or other gun mags of that time frame. I have some from the early late 50 and early 1960 time frame so I'll look. Never know he may be in there. Several collector's produced small multi page flyers/catologs for all the folks back then to drool over. No pictures just really good desriptions such as your letter.

I like that your Uncle lived in Vista California. I had an Aunt and Uncle who had a little avacado ranch in Vista, and I currently have a Niece and Nephew in Vista. Vista is a nice place.  Wink

I think Mike's posted suggestion was valuable, that is, to give Mr. Gary Quinlan a telephone call with a request for his assistance.

I respect Gary's opinions on matters, and his wide knowledge on all things single shot.

Do you want me to phone up Gary or will someone else do that?

I forgot, I also spoke with Gail and Paul at CPA Rifles.  Gail thought her father might know of something but no luck there either.  Steve B

Hello Steve;

It may prove to be beneficial if someone of us were to telephone the Curator at the National Rifle Association headquarters (museum) located in Fairfax County, Virginia and pose the question there.

Addendum:

Having just re-read the correspondence from 1948, there is really nothing to suggest that the "Wilson Collection" was exclusively or predominantly J. Stevens A & T Co, in nature.

Using the term, the "Wilson Collection" by the letter writer, i.e., the seller, most likely was just "puffing" for the sake of marketing.  You also will notice that the writer says that the piece is of museum quality, again just a marketing ploy.

In my opinion only,

  CMM

My guess is that in 50 years nobody will remember the Simmons collection, the Cook collection, or the Schlegel collection.

Probably/sadly too true,  no one ever documented Jerry's collection I'm sure.
even the auction house probably never put the whole thing (assuming they got all of it)  in one catalogue.
