Cannon Rebuild

I inherited this cannon several years ago and always wanted to restore it. I finally got started a few months ago. The barrel is a half scale  U.S. Model 1857 Napoleon. The exterior had never been smoothed from casting, add to that about 30 years of neglect. It took at least 16-20 hrs to get it smoothed and polished. The 2 5/16" bore was badly pitted. I sleeved it using seamless drilling stem to 2" bore and put on a temporary coat of paint. I've got most of the metal parts made for the new carriage, waiting on the wood spoke wheels to be delivered.
The bottom pic is similar to a U.S. Model 1841 Field Howitzer and is the visual pattern I'll try to follow because of the half scale barrel. More pics to follow.

The wheels arrived yesterday afternoon. Got the axle beam roughed out and steel axle fitted this morning before it got too hot.

Got the tow beam partially roughed out and the gun set on for try fitting the elevation screw. For a sense of scale the wheels are 30" diameter.

Might have something to do with your email address - but I'm guessing - I've asked for help there.

CW, thanks for your help. Fritz, I've got most of the the metal parts done and fitted, the trunnion bottom sleeves and straps were a challenge, top caps tomorrow, tow beam recoil shoe done except for a of bit tweaking on the pintle hitch. Side straps, cross bolt plates, and ram rod brackets yet to be made.

Skratch,
Where did you get the wheels? Have heard an Amish group is making them. The scale is excellent. Appreciate the posts and pictures. Nice iron work.

Chuckster, I did get them from the Amish. Google "Amish Wares". Interesting site.
A lot of credit goes to Don, my bro-in-law for the welding on the iron work and the helping hands throughout the build.

Finally got the rest of the parts made and assembled except the ram rod ferrules. Took it all apart, went a lot faster than putting it together!  Now it's filling, sanding, and final finish. The ferrules will be made while the paint is curing.

Great looking cannon. I machined up a Cohorn motar a couple of years ago so I know the feeling of completing the job. The best part is when you light off the fuse and it goes bang. enjoy the fruits of your labors.

Thanks Boats. I've got it apart now for the finish work. Decided to lose the lifting handle, seemed a good idea at the time but I think it would look better on a barn door.  Wink Going to make some other parts in keeping with a more complete traditional look.

Having shot these cannon's for the last 30 years you need the handles on the side of the trail for lifting and moving it.  One on each side that way the wife/girlfriend can help move it as well as crewing the gun

Now does your tube have a seamless liner? If so was it cast in Place or set in after casting? If cast in place was the tube poured verticals or horizontally ?

A seamless liner cast in place, don't know whether vertical or horizontal. The bore was pitted, I inserted another seamless liner reducing the bore diameter to 2".

Thanks to all for the comments.  Smiley Sportslube, the load is 800 gr. FFG, projectile is a 2 1/2" x 1 15/16" concrete cylinder, don't know the weight. Pic's are powder only noise maker and the projectile and powder in aluminum foil sleeve. The 1st shot with projectile, aimed at the backstop on our 25 yard range, hit high on the berm and off into the open desert to parts unknown.  Smiley I need to make a sight for elevation, next project I guess.
It was a fun build.

What type of projectile? Rifled bore? The canister load would be devastating!  Shocked Do you know how my 800gr load would  translate to oz's? It seems a bit low by the way the gun reacted. I'll probably be shooting at about 400 - 500 yds max.

Round ball, smooth bore, pure wheel weights, about 3 lbs in weight.  7000 grains divide by 16 eachs 437.5 grain or one oz.  rule of thumb start with 1 1/2 oz per bore inch. 3 lb ball weighs more than concrete. But retain your wind age around your projectile.  The ball should roll out it you tilt the barrel down. If it sticks it is to tight for the bore.  Always worm first then load the first round, then worm sponge, worm again.  With a thumb over the vent hole the entire time.  This is done between each shot.Never ever hold the rod tight in your hand.  Palm facing up on the rod, and thumb is never ever touching the rod.  Because if you did have a miss fire your arm does not go down range with the ram rod.

OK, if I figured right for a 2" bore I would need about 3 oz or approx. 1300 gr. For projectile windage a 1 7/8" ball would be about right.
I know a guy that has a 2'' tube and a custom 1 7/8" mold, I have a lot of pure & wheel weight lead. Maybe I can work a deal with him.  Wink
Thanks for the info AND advice!

If he is shooting the same size.   Duplicate his load and see how it works.  His charge would be the same as yours.  Easier to copy than start from scratch.

Thanks for the info sportslube, I go one step further. I made a test tube using a short piece of brass stock that would allow the projectile to roll through. If the Golf ball does not roll freely I do not use it. The gage is bored to 1.750 as I fire a Motar. I am not so lucky to have the Desert to use for a range, just a 200 yard rifle in ME. and lots of woods.

I've just got to post this.  Wink I figured since the cannon is half scale and my wife is too I got her to pose for the pic. I told her she was Sgt. of the 1st Northern Socorro Co. Light Artillery because she got to light the fuse and could run faster than me. She's a good sport.  If she knew I posted it though she'd probably poke me with the bayonet.  Grin
