original Hi Wall sights ?

I've become the proud owner of an early 1890s Hi Wall.
It has some funky modern sights.
What sights would have been available for the rifle?
Were there any other optional sights at the time?
I would like to put something on the rifle that would be more in line with what was available?
It's a shuetzen rifle.
Thanks
Jim

Your rifle most likely would have had a Winchester midrange vernier sight and  a windgauge sight on the front.  Most likely a Winchester.  Look through this site. Lots of excellent pictures of the correct sights on Win Schuetzens.

Oh, welcome to the forum. Lots and lots of good information here.

If you could post a picture of your rifle, we would love to see it.   Wink

I would suggest a Shaver Soule rear sight and a Stevens repro front sight. You should be able to get both for about $350.

I'd love to see the rifle, too Smiley

65pan and I traded rifles. He is now the proud owner of my original 32-40 with 30" long #3 barrel, straight-grip stock with Swiss buttplate and I of his C. Sharps silhouette rifle in 40-65. Am going to copy a few pages of sights from Campbell's book and send. Many Lyman, Marbles and Winchester would be correct.

Sounds like a Special Sporting Rifle, not a Schuetzen model.

We got ta have pictures.   SSShooter, you got some pictures?   Post them will ya?  That is if it's okay with the new owner.

Some straight grip Winchesters had Swiss butt plates.  Sounds interesting.

Couple of pic's are in this thread, where 65pan first saw the rifle. As he wanted a rifle for Schuetzen and I wanted a silhouette rifle, worked out well. You can see the Lyman 17A front, which is not inappropriate for the rifle. I use the 17A on my current silhouette rifle and it is just fine. Lee Shaver sells a nice selection of inserts. However, am not sure what the rear sight is, but any of the modern Soule sights would be a good match. In fact, if only shooting at 100yd or 200yd, it would be fine to get started. Can sometimes find the original Winchester sights on eBay, etc., but the modern equivalents are better.

Yep, a standard Sporting Rifle, with optional small Swiss buttplate. The 17a isn't out of place. A bit newer than the gun, but would have been a later upgrade. The rear is a decent sight, just way newer than the gun. A std. vernier without windage would be a nice option, but a deluxe windage adj. vernier would make shooting even more fun! Or even a windage adj. Marbles or Lyman might be great.

Glenn;
The major reason for our trade, was that I ended up with an original Winchester Hi Wall. Calibre was unimportant.
The 32-40 works out because all of my shooting is fairly close, and if I want to go hunting I'll grab one of my longbows. I own a fair amount of Minnesota, but can't shoot any farther than about 200 yards, too many trees!
The rifle goes along with all of my old stuff: Harleys, Colts, JD 2 cyls, JD dozers, and old cars. I'm still stuck in the sixties. LOL
Thanks again
Jim

If anyone can help me out with an original type of sight, in a browned condition, I'd be game.

Here's a original buckhorn:

Keep an eye on Ebay, as tang sights come up occasionally for auction.

Hi Jim:
That will be a great rifle for what you describe. Just need to pick your loads carefully to insure it does the work. I'm still kicking myself for not taking my 38-56 High Wall down to NC for the deer hunt earlier this week. Hitting them with a 7mm-08 was sort of like cheating. Next year.
That 'buckhorn' sight on eBay will go up in price, but is a nice one and will match the rifle well.
I'll send along the pages from Campbell's books once my wife gives me back my computer. Her's won't scan pic's.
Also, check with Ken Bean @ 717-755-9070. He specializes in old and antique sights.

I'm fortunate enough to have a orginal High Wall mid range tang sight. It came with my DST High Wall that was a local rifle.

Because of that, I've noticed the ones that have been listed on Ebay. THEY ARE NOT CHEAP! They go for at least $600 in good shape. There is one that still may be listed, it's front and rear sights and he asks $2700. I do hope no one has bought it at that price Smiley

Jim, If you can decide exactly which sights you want try Buckingham's Antique Winchesters, 501 Eaton-Brazil Road, Trenton, TNc 38382. Phone day or night 731-559-4169. He supplied me with a rear barrel sight for my sporting High Wall 32-40 with a perfect patina match on my description over the phone. He guarntees his sales but I did not have to exercise that option. Was not cheap $175 but it is correct. Be forewarned he is a bit of a character, I like him and hope to visit him soon.

Take a look at the Red River sights. They are good copies of the origional Winchester sights and they are reasonable.

I've got this inexpensive rear sight on one of my Hi walls:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

It was too new for my gun's finish, so I polished off much of the finish and touched it up with cold bluing. It looks much closer, and actually works extremely well considering the $65 price tag.
My Lee Shaver windage vernier sight is one of my favorites too, and at $200 for a midrange they are a real bargain.

+1 to marlinguy.  I have one of those same sights on one of my 'walls and it is fine for the purpose.  I wouldn't expect to win a national match with it, but it works well for general target shooting and just knocking around.
