I've become the proud owner of an early 1890s Hi Wall.
It has some funky modern sights.
What sights would have been available for the rifle?
Were there any other optional sights at the time?
I would like to put something on the rifle that would be more in line with what was available?
It's a shuetzen rifle.

Sounds like a Special Sporting Rifle, not a Schuetzen model.

Couple of pic's are in this thread, where 65pan first saw the rifle. As he wanted a rifle for Schuetzen and I wanted a silhouette rifle, worked out well. You can see the Lyman 17A front, which is not inappropriate for the rifle. I use the 17A on my current silhouette rifle and it is just fine. Lee Shaver sells a nice selection of inserts. However, am not sure what the rear sight is, but any of the modern Soule sights would be a good match. In fact, if only shooting at 100yd or 200yd, it would be fine to get started. Can sometimes find the original Winchester sights on eBay, etc., but the modern equivalents are better.

The major reason for our trade, was that I ended up with an original Winchester Hi Wall. Calibre was unimportant.
The 32-40 works out because all of my shooting is fairly close, and if I want to go hunting I'll grab one of my longbows. I own a fair amount of Minnesota, but can't shoot any farther than about 200 yards, too many trees!
The rifle goes along with all of my old stuff: Harleys, Colts, JD 2 cyls, JD dozers, and old cars. I'm still stuck in the sixties. LOL

That will be a great rifle for what you describe. Just need to pick your loads carefully to insure it does the work. I'm still kicking myself for not taking my 38-56 High Wall down to NC for the deer hunt earlier this week. Hitting them with a 7mm-08 was sort of like cheating. Next year.
That 'buckhorn' sight on eBay will go up in price, but is a nice one and will match the rifle well.
I'll send along the pages from Campbell's books once my wife gives me back my computer. Her's won't scan pic's.

Jim, If you can decide exactly which sights you want try Buckingham's Antique Winchesters, 501 Eaton-Brazil Road, Trenton, TNc 38382. Phone day or night 731-559-4169. He supplied me with a rear barrel sight for my sporting High Wall 32-40 with a perfect patina match on my description over the phone. He guarntees his sales but I did not have to exercise that option. Was not cheap $175 but it is correct. Be forewarned he is a bit of a character, I like him and hope to visit him soon.
