Stevens Model 700

Anybody ever heard of this one? Looking at one on Gunbroker that the seller says is a 700. Has 700 marked on the bottom of the barrel. I am not familiar with a 700 model.  Looks more like a 404 to me except for the fact that there is no provision for a reciever sight. Gun has been in England. Rear barrel sight is supposed to be British and looks like it is. Sling ring under barrel looks right. Slling ring on stock looks like British addition. Round barrel looks right. Stock and butplate looks right. Forearm looks right but I am not sure about the full length groove by the barrel. 44 1/2 action and .22 chambering looks right. Front sight is wrong and it has  Lyman #2 tang sight as near as I can tell. Gun is a little rough but not a disaster. I am not sure just exactly what it is. Forearm and lack of holes for reciever have me stumped. Stock and butplate look like 404. Possibly English Model with different forearm? Probably not because it has a round barrel. Possibly a standard 44 1/2 ordered wiith a round barrel, shotgun butplate,  404 or special order forearm, and Lyman tang sight?? The checkering pattern on the forearm matches the 404 in the catalog.

Slumlord, I usually don't use Jay Kimmel's book for info but he does show a reprint of a Stevens flyer for the Stevens Ideal #700 on page 120

The rifle you speak of has been milled to accept a barrel mounted sight that has a very long dovetail, As far as I'm concerned the barrel has been screwed up and would be very hard to repair. imo

The model 700 is the same as a 404, except it came with a 24" barrel & English sights, it was made for the English trade & I don't think it was available to the American public.      ...MIKE...

Mike, any other source of reference on this one, partriculary the open sight you refer to? Sure looks like the same gun. Kimmel's book shows a scope but says it is available without a scope. Trying to confirm if the barrel has been altered or if it came that way. Book shows it with a tang sight. I know my Stevens Bisley came with English sights but it was built on a Martini. Will check more of my references and see if I can find anything. Have had Kimmel's book for years and never noticed the 700.

Found a picture of a 700, says, Parker Hale tang sight, doesn't mention front, but looks like Stevens globe, no rear barrel sight or dovetail cuts. RE: ASSRA Journal Vol. 35 NO.1, a small artical by Paul Shuttleworth.       ...MIKE...

Mike, any possibility of getting a copy of that article? My membership doesn't go back anywhere near that far. I see there is a bid on that rifle. Still thinking about it. There are some issues with it but I like the odd and unusual Stevens. Still kicking myself for passing on at least one rare Stevens because the condition was not good enough to suit me. Still looking for ANY example of that one.

This one sold for $2025. I quit at $2000. Probably should have stoped long before that but I realy like the odd ones. Anyone here buy it? Anybody here have a copy of a Stevens British Catalog from the 1910 to 1916 time frame?
