Dont remember reading what he used. He was a perty smart man though. So my guess is that he used a 1/4 inch hard steel rod with brass jags. And a leather button between the jag and rod to protect the muzzle. And of course he always used a drilled case for a bore guide.  Cotton patches and Hoppes solvent.  He never let the rod rub on the bore and wiped the rod off, often.  Just a guess.  Undecided   

Now that I have you straightened out I'm going to go shoot a rifle. And I'm taking my hardened steel cleaning rods with me.  BYE!!!

I've been using Lyman Super Moly lube in ,30s and a .45-70, and find that the second patch is clean. This with only one groove lubed. I'm beginning to suspect that the black stuff we get out of SS barrels may just be burned lube. If we can clean a barrel with two patches, the importance of or danger in using various cleaning rods wanes. Nyet?
