Next Wednesday!

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

All I know about it now is:
* It's a AYDT 8.15x46R, 32" barrel with diopter, key and foresight that is windage adjustable
* Groove 313, proof year unknown
* In 'New' Condition. Per the seller, has never been shot since it was made
*  Bought or 'acquired'  Wink at end of WWII by the seller's father in Germany and has been a Safe Queen since that time

This is my 1st European rifle and it looks to be a beauty.  Have a 316 stop ring mold on order.  CH4D dies came and have reformed a hundred 30-30 cases.  Have no idea as of yet, whether the cases will drop in or the rims need to be trimmed

Next Wednesday can't come quick enough  Smiley

Thats a nice looking second model Aydt you almost have there John Boy!

I hope you dont suffer too much until Wednesday, ha ha .  Roll Eyes  And of course you wont be the one to shoot it the very first time will you?  You must keep a stiff upper lip and consider it's value as an unfired collectors item. Heh heh heh.  Smiley

You will probably need to take a few thou off the rim thickness.
Try 14grn of 4227.
I am envious: you have the diopter sight. It is missing from my Buechel.

Holy cow!  They're coming out of the wood work!!  That one on top looks to be unfired too. I never saw so many nice German rifles.  Is it a third model Aydt?  How old did you say you were Frank?  Huh

Thanks for the fine looking rifles - real lookers!
Since I'm a neophyte to the Aydt system rifle, tried to find some links in the Internet that would educate me.  Truthfully, no in depth detail articles but I did find some neat links of interest:
* Book ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
* Turn your Google translator on ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
* Here's a pdf sheet to record your diopter settings ...
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);
Translations:
Waffe - Arms
Schiessstand - Range
Entfernung - Distance
Korngrosse - Grain
A & B - Record Diopter Settings
Besonderes - Special, guess for notes

And I did find pictures of various systems, 65 different types of systems made between 1872-1939.  Looks like the rifle I bought is a Aydt System II "rotating block closure" of Carl Wilhelm Aydt in Suhl (eg Büchel, Aydt, Kolbe) with Tyrolean checkering for starters

Joe,
Both actions are the same type as Fred's and not Aydt's. They have the breech blocks hinged on the lever and are falling blocks.

The upper is a 8.15 with a .316 groove and is all original. I shot it a lot the first 3 years I had it in OH matches. The lower is a 22rf with a barrel by George Titherington (famous 1930's RF barrel maker).

66 year old, Frank

PS
I think I have at least 20 more years left. I have a uncle that will be 100 in April  Grin

Beautiful rifles with crisp case coloring.  Thanks for posting.  I see similar ones every now and then at firearms shows.  Some will have the two pieces that look like fingernail clams on the left side of the receiver.  Not knowing anything about them and not wanting to look like I don't, I've never asked.  Roll Eyes What do they do?  Are they safeties or disassembly pins or what?  Huh Bob

Boy, if all these quality made rifles could talk ... pins won, targets shot, conversations held and good times at the various Schuetzenfest banquets.
BTW, the BACO 316 stop ring mould came.  My hat is off to Jim who makes them @ BACO.  Can't even see the parting lines and the bases are only 0.001 variance, 315-316

A little over five days John. Only five days. One 5 day work week and your rifle will be delivered.  You must be be in terrible agony. The waiting and waiting.  Hopefully you're employed. A job helps to pass the time.

Casting bullets will also help. You could probly cast ten or fifteen thousand bullets in a 5 day work week. That is, if you cast night and day. I sure hope they work in your rifle. Can always remelt them.  Cant wait to see all your targets once you get it in a little over a week. 5   d   a   y   s.

Joe, I have no idea what they are.  They are the cartridges in the picture that the seller had in the picture that he used to advertise the rifle on the auction site.  I doubt that he even had any 8.15x46R loaded rounds because he said the rifle was never shot  since it was obtained at the end of WWII

The last day is the worst. Will it be here on time?  I remember tracking a parcel carried by Fedex. It came from the East coast, Salt Lake City then Portland then Seattle, then Port Angeles, then Portland, then Seattle then back to Port Angeles. I finally called the seller and asked him to contact the shipper. Another three days and I had my parcel. It was only a berry steamer. My God, if it had been a nice Aydt rifle it might have killed me.  Shocked

Yeah, the last day is the worst.

Sorry Joe, thought the post about the diopter covered that it came, anyway ... it came to the FFL on Tuesday, picked it up on Wednesday and was in perfect shape including a soft rifle case.  It was wrapped up like a mummy and would have prevented the UPS gorillas from doing any damage.
The rifle is complete with the 'normal' diopter, replacement keys and a foresight ramped blade sight.  At one time it had a barrel receiver sight based on the slight drag marks on the rail.  Bluing is 98+ , the case coloring is 100% and the pictures of the wood tells the story - beautiful.  It is a System II and has a proof date of November 1920 (11 20) stamped on the Bohler Special steel barrel.  The groove is 312. The block is not stamped with any gunsmiths name, so suspect it was a guild made rifle.
Have a 100 cases reformed and rims turned from 30-30's, loaded and ready to shoot next weekend.  Am using 316 stop ring bullets

Been busy so I haven't taken my own pictures but will and post them.

The open sight that fits on the rib is shown on the picture of mt Buechel, above. There were special "field" competitions, which used an oval target for these.
I also have this scope, made in Wetzler, which fits on the rib and has a special mounting with windage adjustment on it. This is the only one I have ever seen.

Interesting Fred.
Can you post more pictures?

Glad to hear the rifle got to you in good shape John Boy.

The scope from my slug gun was lost in the mail recently. It wasnt worth much but will be expensive to replace.

,312 bore? .316 bullets?  Hmm?  Might be okay, I'm using .321s in my .316 Stahl barrel.

Does your Aydt #2 fit you properly?

Your sight description seems to be an oxymoron.  (barrel receiver sight) ?

Joe, the cheek piece and length of pull fit perfectly for me to provide an immediate straight sight plane down the barrel when I bring it up to the shoulder.  Plus, the balance is excellent. And here are a couple of pictures of the barrel rear sight off a 'Original Syst Tanner' that I want to find and put on the rifle.  It is on a rifle owned by a gun crank friend of mine.  I may have to opt for a different sight because the claw for the Tanner sight rail diameter is 0.538 and mine has a rail diameter of 0.630

I am not sure if this is the type of German sight, that you are discussing.
This one sold on evilbay a couple of week ago. I have a similar sight.

Sorry not any clue!  Embarrassed  Undecided

Because in Germany nobody used a barrel sight. They shot in the old days sometimes with a barrel sight for the 300 meter target. But normally they shot only with diopter and front sight.

In the German shooting rules since ever it was defined, that only two sights were allowed: diopter and front-sight OR barrel-sight and front-sight. So everybody decided to shoot with diopter and not with barrel-sight.

Biggi and I have been going round and round about the use of two versus  three sights on German rifles.  It's really neck and neck at the moment. So close I wouldnt be willing to make any solid comments on the use of sights, way back in the very OLD days.   Roll Eyes

The picture on the Utah Schuetzen Society's home page clearly shows rifles with all three sights intact. Biggi counters with, this picture was not taken in Germany.  About the time I think I have her she comes up with an excellent counter.  She says these hombres are not dressed well enough to be German or Bavarian. I counter that there sure is a lot of German looking stuff in that picture!

Westerner, take a close look at that Utah picture again, far right corner, 3rd man headed left, that is a Military man in his summer uniform, the hat is a dead give away. And I'm sure German, Austrian,Prussion  or Swiss, and my guess is before WW1.

In the old days in Germany the members of a shooting club or shooting society posed completely different then the guys on that Utah-pic.

They wore the Sunday-suit and maybe their honor-decorations. And most of the time they showed their club-flag and some valuables.

The pic above shows a north Bavarian shooting club in the year 1904 "Zimmerstutzen-Schützen-Club Aub".

I don't think some of the guys in Chinquapin Schuetzenverein ever wear a suit and tie!  Wink  A nice big flag would look good in the clubhouse, though.  I'll have to start checking into that.  BTW, Biggi, do the clubs today still give plates and bowls as major trophies, or have they gone to more modern trophies or just medals?  Do you usually shoot the honor target just once a year or every match or what?  I ask because I am organizing the events for Chinquapin SV and would like to at least consider ways to incorporate more "traditional" styling into our program.  Cool

Regards,
Froggie

Hi Froggie,

I think to this topic a lot of guys have some questions. So I opened another thread for that in General > General Discussion: "German prize-shootings nowadays"
