heavier barrel on Ruger

I want to put a heavier 45/70 barrel on my Ruger #1s action. I would like it to be full octogon. I waould like it to be the same diameter from breech to muzzle as the breech diameter is now. I want it to be for scope only. I want to use the hanger system that is on it now. Is there a gunsmith that you can recommend to do this work? Thanks for your answer, Hank45

Check with John Taylor at Taylor Machine. He frequently posts on this board.

John Taylor or just about anybody ought to be able to rebarrel a #1.  I hope you're not planning to rebarrel that #1 for BPCS, as they're not legal in any configuration, FYI

The Ruger is legal for NRA target rifle competition but as a previous poster said, not for silhouette.
The maximum barrel diameter will be determined by the diameter across the octogon points and not the flats as the points have to clear the hanger when it is screwed into the receiver.
I've seen where the hanger was removed and the spring is anchored to the barrel.  FM

If the standard Ruger main spring strut is retained the max diameter for a round barrel or across the points of an octogon barrel is approximatly 1.2".                  andyZ
