Van, to get back to your original question, is your barrel a Winchester #5 size or a Douglas/Shilen #5?  Big difference in dimensions and weight!

Dave, once that barrels been cut to 16 inches, then turned down some and fluted, it wont matter what contour it was/is.  I think Vans gonna need a bloop tube.

I can only get wireless internet reception at part of the club property and only some of the time there.  For that reason, I printed out my very own copy of the rules as they appear on the website and as given to me by SSRJ editor John Merz.  If anybody argues with me, I can hit them with the notebook containing the print out... it's a lot bigger than the old printed rule book I had from before!  Roll Eyes

Thats great you have an official Green frog rule book. The trouble is, the Schutzenmeister at Tacoma will print his. Now in Tacoma they allow bolt action rifles in the ASSRA matches. Will that Scutzenmeister amend his book just a wee bit?
The Canadian Schutzenmeister who uses a handicap system. Will he maybe adjust his book just a smudge to accomodate his shooters?

How many different unofficial versions will we have ?

Chuck Bordman doesnt have a computer. He's never gonna have a computer.

We need a new official paper rule book like we had before.  I'll take two. Thank you.

Fact of the matter is single shot shooting is largely shot under individual club rules with no central control

NRA rules matches are very specific and if running one of there matches (I am the MD at our club for Smallbore Silhouette) you have to stay between the lines.  I just got a letter from NRA on my tardy match reporting. Not a problem but they are clearly in control.

I would rather have it the Single Shot way, close to the rule but do what you like locally.

I'm confused,
Boats, you are saying that a lot matches are shot under individual club rules with no central control, then why have any ASSRA rules at all, just go shoot and have fun, how could any organization or association have different rules for different clubs or parts of the country ?. If shooting in a ASSRA match shouldn't all the shooting being done be governed by the same ASSRA rules ?.  How can some be allowed to use bolt actions in an ASSRA match and others not allowed ?.

Joe, your sayin that the Canadian Schutzenmeister uses a handicap system, how can that be ?. no wonder there always winin' Smiley.

I thought that ASSRA was finely gettin there stuff together when they did away with the "about" rule , I always got a kick out of the barrel diameter rule, when it said the barrel will be "about"  2 inches in diameter, ya that's what it said, is that like a "rolling" stop at a stop sign, tell that to any cop and see how far you get.

How can any association possibly keep records on who shot what and with what ?

Set Trigger not so confusing

My area we have two very good Schuetzen matches shot under ASSRA rules. We also shoot three very good Single Shot matches not under ASSRA rules. There are also a lot of matches shot under NRA rules.

Makes no difference to me who sanctions the match, if it's a good match it's a good match.  Local rules suit local conditions.  We had two bolt gun shooters yesterday at our Club Rimfire Single Shot Offhand Ram match. Fine with me, they were not eligible for prizes or match placing. Fellows may show up next month with a Single Shot. Have seen that progression many times.

Match winner was a Nice Martini Out shot several high dollar bolt actions

Boats,
I get it now, the matches your talking about are not ASSRA matches, just fun get together shoot um ups. I'm so involved with NRA matches where it's a very level playing field for all shooters that I wasn't getting the it's just a "fun"  make your own rules as you go along get together event.

We call them farm shoots where I come from, each area has there own rules for there own shoot, most just shoot what they hunt with, some bring out the target guns but there are times that a farmer will win with his huntin rifle now and then.

That statement does not apply here Boats. At Tacoma, a ASSRA affiliated club, has always until very recently followed ASSRA rules.

At Springfiled Oregon, same thing.

The BP matches are another story.  Silhouette matches of course are NRA.

Joe,
I am curious as to why you believe the Stevens Crackshot is not legal for ASSRA matches.

I havn't looked at the recent changes in the rules Craig.  .22 rimfires are not legal in centerfire matches according to ASSRA rules. ISSA rules allow .22s to be used in CF matches.  A centerfire Stevens Crackshot would be legal in centerfire matches in either organization.

Is that correct?  I forgot that Van shoots ISSA matches at SLC Utah.

IF I had an official handbook of ASSRA rules I could look it up real easy.  Wink

This is the quote from post # 15 Van.

We ran out of answers to your question about barrel weight Van.

To recap, you can cut it to 16 inches. Turn the diameter down. Or flute it. Or any or all of these methods.  You could have a smith line a piece of aluminum I suppose.  But that would be silly.

Set Trigger a bit more formal than you illustrate.  Shooting Schuetzen around the country I have seen many local variations with ASSRA affiliated clubs and Clubs that used to be ASSRA affiliated. Also consider there are 3 single shot organizations outside of NRA competition .

Point is nobody is looking over the local Schuetzenmasters shoulder and they often make adjustments as they see fit.

This is very different than NRA that takes a active part in match organization and has a paid staff keeping things in line.  Personally it makes no difference to me, have seen pro's and con's to each management style.

Van, if you're just shooting with your scope, then any legal barrel length will be fine.  If you use iron sights, the (joking) suggestion of turning the barrel down and aluminum sleeving it really is not a bad idea.  Essentially a permanently attached light weight bloop tube, to get your front sight out there.  Done well, the joint would be almost invisible, and then paint the barrel with a good epoxy based black paint.  Fluting your existing barrel, even done pretty deeply, will only shave off an ounce or two...hardly worth the trouble!
