32-40 Insert

Have been offered a 45-70 High Wall with a heavy Badger half-round 30" barrel for a fair price. I am wondering if there is a a 32-40 insert that can be dropped into this barrel to allow one to shoot 32-40 when wanted and removed in order to shoot 45-70 when wanted? I do this with my shotgun (.410, 28, 20 & 12ga) and am wondering if there is something similar with BPCR rifles. Thanks.

Let's see, .458-.322=.136/2=.068. That last number is the wall thickness of your theoretical barrel insert. In other words, I'd say no to a 32-40 barrel insert. 22 Hornet or 25-20 maybe.
Shotguns operate at lower pressures and the adapters are usually only in the chamber area, unless you have some expensive Kreighoff, Kolar, Purbaugh(sp?) tubes.

Yep.........that seems a mite thin. Especially if one adds in the rifling. Thanks.

In the "close but no cigar" department, you can get adaptors to go in the chamber only of some rifles, so you could shoot, for instance, .45 Colt in your .45-70 or .32 S&W in the .32-40 you are trying to get to.  These are not sufficiently accurate for 100-200 yd competitions, but are fun for mild indoor loads.

Speaking of mild indoor loads, you might want to look into the Lyman "collar button" bullet for your .45-70 if that style of shooting is your goal.

45/70 Gallery is a lot of fun. Download light bullets to sub sonic with pistol powders they will shoot as good as most .22 rimfires. And you don't  have to buy adaptors.

Short range outdoors to 100 or even 200 yards lightly loaded 45/70's are real useful too.  I have a Raphine mold that throws 360 gr's It's shaped like the old Gould Hollow Point bullet without the hollow. Load it with 4759 and it's recoils like a 32/40. Only difference in cost vs 32/40 is the extra weight of lead
