chambering a ruger #1

i am looking for a gunsmith who will barrel and chamber my #1 ruger action to 32 miller. i have a new octagon barrel which measures 1.07" at the widest points on the octagon.
i want someone who understands breech seating and has the reamer for that.
i was told the largest barrel i could have is 1.15" due to the hanger???
i am sure someone in assra land can point me to a good  smith
thanks

Dave,
My gunsmith has done a lot of # 1's, in fact that's about all he does so he knows them inside and out. He has done a 32 Miller Short for me and owns the reamer, has even done a 22 LR for me and it works and shoots great. I think he's getting jamed up with winter work right now but if you dont mind waiting till early spring to get it back he can do a great job.

As to the barrel,  he has done them for me up to 1.185 without the hanger being a problem.

has it been so long that people no longer remember there was a 32 Miller before the short version came out in 1990 or so?

The hanger on the Ruger can be removed and Mainspring base is attached to the barrel as in the Winchester 1885. I also removed the ejector kicker from several that I have re-barreled. The forend is then screwed directly to the barrel. This was the way many were done in the 1980's and 90's when trying to get them to shoot better. I still think it is the way todo the job.

I have heated and bent the hanger down a little for octagon barrels to clear, never had a problem.
Dave, how was your firing pin moved for the rim fire conversion? The last one I did I put the chamber at 12 0-clock and used a lower front sight. It was a bit of fun turning the threads off center. The barrel was taper octagon.

Laurie,
Can you post any picture of this conversion? I've rebarrelled a #1, but used a slim barrel to fit the hanger.

The only one I have is the first one I did for myself. I reused the original hanger and it dosn't look very good but I will try to take a few pictures next week. I have a picture of a proper hanger some place and will take a picture and include it also.

Laurie,
I looked in the DeHaas book & it shows several ways to bed a #1. One is with the hanger shortened, with forend screwed to a new block attached to the barrel ahead of the shortened hanger.

Is this the way you did it, or did you cut the hanger off at the action & attach the mainspring to the barrel?

Regards,
Ron
