WINCHESTER WINDER

I have a winchester winder musket 3rd model 22 short,  it will extract the shells but not really eject them,  is this correct or should there be some type of spring to assist in the ejection?  under the forearm in the very front of the receiver there is a little screw, if there is supposed to be a spring is this where it would go?
Also if there is supposed to be a spring where might I beable to purchase 1 ?  Ive had this gun for a couple of yrs and just now getting around to playing with it.  I am wanting to turn this rifle into my main squirrel hunting gun, so soon as I get the action all figured out I will be have a 2nd barrel relined to 17HM2,  Im guessing there should be no troubles with this caliber in the 44 action.
any help would be appreciated

thanks James

Ejector spring, I have seen some made from music wire but the last one I needed I had to make myself from spring stock.

Here are some places to try;

Jack First (605) 343-9544

Ballard Rifle Co. 1-866-997-4353

I have found these little piano wire springs at gunshows too.

I'm on the road this weekend, but if nobody gets back to you by Sunday night/Monday morning, I'll see if I have one I can photograph and post.  I will say, though, that I have never seen a Winder with what I would call "enthusiastic" ejection.  I am used to plucking out the spent cases with my nails, hence the popularity of 3rd Models (low-walls) for the .22 short case!

well my plans changed today,  I still would like to find a ejection spring, but now I am just going to rebarrel the winder, the original barrels rifling was nasty, and I  already had  a extra very nice winder barrel , thought I would have the barrels swapped, then reline the bad barrel for the 17 mach2,     well I ran across a deal today at the gunshow that I just couldnt pass up,  bought a uberti low wall in 17  hmr.  I hope I didnt make a mistake but the gun was a really fair deal in my opinion,  not too much more than it was going to cost me to have the reline done on the winder.  the uberti barrel has been cut down from the original 30 inch to 24 inch, which suited me just fine, as soon as  I can locate a smaller tube type scope I will mount it on the uberti and it will become my squirrel rifle.  I will start another post on what malcom style scopes would be best for my intentions with the gun,

   Both types of ejector springs can be had from Numrich Arms (gunpartscorp*dot*com). I'm pretty sure they're reproductions, but they work alright. Hope this helps.
