stevens favorite scope mt

I am new to this style of shooting and have a favorite that Id like to try. since I dont have an external adj target scope, I dont want to D&T untill I settle on a final scope setup. So I came up with the idea of making a "no gunsmithing " mount  that will be low enough to see through the tang sight and use either a rimfire tip off mount or a weaver rail.
my idea uses a blank in the rear sight dovetail thats tapped. I have a round barrel so over that Id  put a half round base that would be secured to the barrel with the dovetail blank. then to firm everything up Id add set screws at all four corners. my question is has anyone else tried such a mount? and if so did it work? thanks in advance, DR

I made this mount for my son with standard tip-off grooves for a 22 scope. It seems to work well.

The slug for the dovetail is separate, and the mount screws into it to firm up that end. The rear of the mount is slotted and a cross screw clamps to the octagon flats.

Gary Staup showed me a mount that was just grooved for Lyman/Unertl mounts and glued to the flats with silicone caulk. He claimed it worked well without damaging the barrel. It was one piece, full length.
