Stevens 414 Extractor help

I have a Stevens 414 in decent shape except that the previous owners dry fired it to death.  Now the extractor has been all chopped up by what might be a home made firing pin and the gun fails to fire with most 22 ammo (except some old Remington Gallery rounds with thick rims)  I need a trusted smith in the northeast, preferably in NY, or other advice on how to repair it.  Also, the hammer seems to be dropping a bit weakly...thoughts?  I am new here and could use some good help.  I would consider a full restoration or at least a good action repair.  The gun is very accurate (when it fires) Thanks in advance. Not sure if it takes the same extractor as the 44 but here are some parts.

Thanks for the lead on parts.  I looked at it and will have to study it more to figure out which (if any) of the 44 parts fit.  If anyone knows and can save me the grief, maybe I will try to repair it myself.  If I do that, I will fill these pages with requests for help though!  So who repairs these guns and has a good reputation?

thanks again

Thanks for the help.  Can someone tell me which of the 44 extractors work on the 414 in 22.  Would Wisners be able to tell me?  How difficult are these guns to take apart, and more importantly, put together?  I do not want to farkenparker it...is that the guys name? Grin

The extractor in my 414 in .22 Short caliber is actually marked "22 short". I can't imagine how it would differ from one for .22LR.
It is the one with the spring and plunger and it really zings those empties out.

  Hey Snert;

     Let me suggest an equally as good alternative to purchasing a new made extractor from Mr. Wisner.

     Actually, the spring loaded version is call an ejector since the spent case is " ejected " out of the breech under spring pressure and onto the ground.  If your spring, and the retainer pin for the spring, are present, which often times they are not, either because the owner did not want that feature or the pin gave out and the spring was lost one day, you could have the top end of the ejector welded up to replace missing metal and then filed back to it's original configuration.

Snert ---

    Mr. John Taylor has an in depth experience and knowledge of the J. Stevens, as well as most other, rifles and the workings of their actions.

He has a flawless reputation and might I suggest that you telephone him for a consultation on your particular situation.  Unfortunately, I'm away and don't have his number right now to give to you.  Why not send John a Personal Message with a request for telephone contact info.

I feel certain that you rifle will be on it's way to a full recovery in Mr. Taylor's able hands.

I will confirm the John Taylor referal. He relined a 44 for me a few years back and corrected a couple of other problems including replacing the extractor. Good work and good guy to deal with. Knows the 44 action among a lot of other guns.
