epoxy for glass bedding

I have decided to do some glass bedding of the forearm of my BSA which has the octagon barrel. I am all out of acraglass, before I order some I thought I should ask if there is any hardware store variety of epoxy or whatever that would work just as well. Thanks! Joe S

I've used the 5minute GEL epoxy.  The gel stays put until it hardens.  Mix in whatever reinforcing fiberglass or coloration of your choosing.

Go to Bench Rest Central and do a search.

Jackie Schmidt just set a new world record and he uses JB.

I have standardized on West System Epoxy resins and there various fillers for all shop epoxy work.  They have light & bulky, heavy and dense,  hard,  soft, sandable, all sorts of filler material that can come up with any sort of epoxy solution required.  Also cure rates in several ranges as well as clear or amber resin's

It's on the shelf at West Marine stores.  Note West Epoxy is not related to West Marine other than the same name. It's packaged by the Gourgeon Brothers well known wood boat builders.  I say packaged because none of the "names" make resin, it's all produced by the large chemical companies & re-sold buy retailers for specific uses. They have some free literature on how to use it.

It beds stocks just fine.

Two part epoxy from golf club suppliers works very good and it is relatively cheap.  One pound for $14.00 plus shipping from Golfworks or go to a Golf Galaxy store near you.

This is the 24 hour stuff.  You can add 5 minute stuff in varying amounts to get it to harden quicker.

You can add powdered aluminum or other stuff and acrylic dies for coloration.

On the same subject, is there a source or alternate for the release agent that is supplied with the Acraglass kits?

Brownells Acra-release works well but very costly. The OLD Johnson's Bowling Alley wax worked just as well but any of the newer waxes  I've used called bowling alley wax is not worth a *#@! I would like to know if anyone has found a certain brand that does work.

Ditto what Fritz said; way better than the Brownell stuff!

Never a problem with Meguiars auto wax. I've also heard of people using Pam cooking spray (I think I may have tried it once) and even WD-40. I'm not sure I'd try WD-40 without a couple test runs though.

I use Johnson's paste floor wax.  I don't recommend using an oil spray like either Pam or WD-40, since you can get bare areas or have it accidentally wipe off before putting the metal into the bedding...then you get the fun exercise of remembering all the nasty language your boot camp drill instructor used on you!   Grin  And yes, the Brownells stuff is way overpriced.

Plenty of release agent is the way to go and nothing better than paste wax.  I also make a puddle of glass on scrap test it for set, when it won't run anymore but not fully cured I pull the barrel out of the stock.

Lot easier than waiting for full set up.

I did a lot of fibreglass work when I was racing motorcycles, and found that wax with a light wipe of WD-40 did very well.   The pros use something I've heard called "colloidal alcohol".  I used to get mine from a crazy old guy in East Providence, RI.  Who was a commercial producer of fibreglass stuff.  That's what he called it.  Never did find out where he got it, but you sprayed a light coat on and let it dry, then went ahead and laid in your gel-coat and all.  The film was so thin that sanding scratches in the mold would be reproduced.   Time came to remove the item from the mold you wetted it with just a sprinkle of water, and the stuff dissolved so fast you wouldn't believe it.  The part then popped right out with no effort at all.    Needless to say you had to keep it totally and utterly water-free until then.   Maybe someone else here will know what the stuff was. . . .?

I'm pretty sure this is what you are refering to;

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

A friend of mine used it as a release agent when building fiberglass kayaks.

I use Marine Tex compound, a thermo set plastic that is available at a good marine supply house. It comes in large units and a small size , which I use. It is mixed in about a 5 to 1 ratio, but the small size has one container of the body and a small bottle of the stuff that makes it "go off". It does not run and is easy to handle and really works well. The only drawback is it only comes in black or white. Top accuracy stockers use it. Mori
