Was in my local dealer's shop today and on the rack was an original Peabody Martini.  I'd like to get some more information about it and ask what it might be worth.  Marked on the left side of the action in four lines of text:  Peabody's Pat./July 22, 1862/Providence Tool Co./PROV. R.I."

Top of action and breech end of barrel had a triangle with a small bump on top and a small line out each side with an "S" behind the triangle on the action.  Rectangle with "WC" inside it stamped on the left side of the buttstock in the grip area.   

30" barrel, ladder rear sight with a tiny inverted V style front sight.

Condition was as follows:  About 80% case color on the action, about 40% on the lever, with considerable patina on the lever and some very light freckling on the lever.  Virtually no case on the butt plate or the hammer and lock, all of which were heavily patinaed/freckled.  90% blue on the barrel.  Butt was in pretty good shape with some handling marks in the wood.  Forend was cut to carbine length and had one barrel band with no sling swivel.  One good ding on the left side of the forend that also gouged the barrel metal.  Chambered for a bottleneck cartridge of unknown caliber (looked to be in the low 40s).  Bright bore with apparently sharp rifling.  Looked to have rifling with three grooves of about equal width to the lands.

So, any idea whether it could actually be brought back as a shooter or is it likely an obscure rimfire?  Asking price is $799.  What might it actually be worth?  Any chance of finding a complete forend and the other barrel band somewhere?

As an aside, he also had two Wesson break action rifles that were pretty cool - one apparently a rimfire of .32 or .38 caliber and the other a centerfire.  They both had considerable finish wear and some other issues, but were cool indeed.  Both had two "triggers", each with its own circular trigger guard.  The forward trigger acted to open the actions.  Also had a nice Remington Rolling Block in .50.
